A nobiliary particle is used in a surname or family name in many Western cultures to signal the nobility of a family. The particle used varies depending on the country, language and period of time. Anna Morris Holstein
Anna Morris Holstein (, Ellis; pen name, Mrs. H.; April 9, 1824 - December 31, 1900) was an American organizational leader, civil war nurse, and author. From 1862 until the close of the war, Holstein was engaged in the hospital service, and after the Battle of Gettysburg, she was matron-in-chief of a hospital in which 3,000 seriously wounded men were looked after. She was the founder and first regent of the Centennial and Memorial Association of Valley Forge, and a regent of the Valley Forge Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.). It was largely through her influence that George Washington's headquarters at Valley Forge were purchased, restored and made accessible to the people. Barry Ralph Holstein (born 1943) is an American physicist. He is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, recipient of the 2019 Herman Feshbach Prize in Theoretical Nuclear Physics, and current editor of the peer-reviewed journal the '' Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science''. Early life and education Barry R. Holstein was born in 1943 in Youngstown, Ohio to parents Eleanor and Edgar R. Holstein. Holstein attended Carnegie Mellon University for his bachelor's degree (1965), master's degree (1967), and PhD (1969). In 1966, Holstein married Carolyn Morrow. Matilda of Holstein or Mechthild (1220 or 1225 – 1288 in Kiel) was a Danish queen consort, married to King Abel of Denmark and later to Birger Jarl, Regent of Sweden. Life Matilda was the daughter of Adolf IV, Count of Holstein, and Heilwig of Lippe. On 25 April 1237 she was married to Abel of Denmark in Schleswig. The marriage was arranged to form a tie between Holstein and Sønderjylland. In 1239, Abel became the guardian of her minor brothers. When Abel became king in 1250, she was crowned with him in Roskilde on 1 November. When Abel died in 1252, he was succeeded by his brother rather than her son Valdemar, who was imprisoned at Cologne at the time, and she was forced to leave Denmark and enter a convent. Theodore David Holstein (Born 18 September 1915 in New York City; died 8. May 1985) was an American theoretical physicist (Solid-state physics and Atomic physics). Holstein studied at New York University, earning a Bachelor's degree in 1935 a PhD in 1940. His thesis ''Passage of Neutrons through Ferromagnetic Materials'' was supervised by Otto Halpern. History The family, which originated from ancient Rhenish-German nobility, came to Sweden from Livonia during the 17th century via the Polish Major Hildebrand Staël.
