Holmesville, New York
Holmesville is a hamlet in Chenango County, New York, United States. It is situated on the Unadilla River, in the south-east corner of the town of New Berlin. Facilities At one time, a branch of the Midland Rail Road had a station in the village. about a one and one-half miles south of South New Berlin. Slightly over two miles south of the village there was a Union church, (built in 1861). At one time Holmesville was a rather thriving village with a district school, two stores, a grist-mill, a saw, shingle and planing mill, a cheese factory (built in 1861), a cheese factory, two shoe shops (kept by Smith O. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. New Berlin (town), New York
New Berlin is a town in Chenango County, in central New York, United States. The population was 2,682 at the 2010 census. The town contains the village of New Berlin. The town is at the eastern border of the county and is northeast of Norwich. History The first European-American settlers arrived ''circa'' 1790, after the American Revolutionary War. This followed the Iroquois League nations being forced to cede most of their territory to the United States following the defeat of their ally Great Britain. The Mohawk and other Iroquois nations moved to Ontario, Canada, where they were granted some land by the British Crown in compensation. Some small reservations were set up for them in New York state. Unadilla River
The Unadilla River is a river in the Central New York Region of New York State. The river begins northeast of the hamlet of Millers Mills and flows generally south to the village of Sidney, where it converges with the Susquehanna River, which drains into the Chesapeake Bay, a bay of the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the length of the Unadilla forms the western border of Otsego County and the eastern borders of Chenango and Madison counties, all in New York. This border made up a significant portion of the Fort Stanwix Treaty Line of 1768. It was meant to establish the border for an Indian reserve, beyond which European-American settlers were not supposed to go. Settlers resented British efforts to control their movements, and continued to encroach on Native American territories. North American area code 607 is a state of New York telephone area code servicing parts of its Southern Tier (which borders Pennsylvania). It was created in 1954 by combining the southern portion of 315 and the eastern portion of 716. Initially, in the late 1940s, area codes with a middle digit of "0" (x0x-xxx-xxxx) were assigned only to jurisdictions covering an entire state.
