Holly Grove Methodist Church
Holly Grove Methodist Church is a historic church in Vernon Parish, Louisiana which was built in 1894 and enlarged in 1915. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The church was founded in the 1830s and was the beginning of Methodism in the extreme western part of Louisiana. Its building was deemed significant as "the only remaining example in Vernon Parish of the type of simple frame churches which characterized much of rural Louisiana at the turn of the century. It is also the parish's oldest extant church structure. Holly Grove, therefore, is a landmark in the sparse architectural history of this comparatively recently settled parish." The church is isolated in a forested area. Anacoco is a village in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Polk South Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Anacoco was named after Bayou Anacoco and the Anacoco Prairie, all of the names most likely being ultimately derived from the Spanish "Llano Cuco" (Raincrow Plain). The French rendered this as "l'Anacoco," mistaking the initial letter as the French definite article, which English-speakers subsequently dropped as unnecessary. Attraction * South Toledo Bend State Park is located on several small bluffs that extend over and into the Toledo Bend Reservoir. Activities include bass fishing tournaments, hiking, cycling, birding, picnics, and camping. The area is a common nesting ground for the bald eagle. Vernon Parish (French: ''Paroisse de Vernon'') is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 52,334. The parish seat is Leesville. Bordered on the west by the Sabine River, the parish was founded in 1871 during the Reconstruction era. It was long a center of the timber industry, which harvested pine in the hills and bottomland hardwoods. Construction of a railway to the area in 1897 stimulated marketing of lumber and businesses in the area. Since World War II, Fort Polk has been most important to the parish economy. The population of the Leesville area rapidly increased fivefold after the fort was opened.
