Hollis Williams
David Hollis Williams FRAeS (18 February 1900 – 2 April 1974) was a British aircraft designer in the early 1930s for the Fairey Aviation Company, later working for Westland Aircraft. Early life He was born in Islington. Career Royal Air Force He became a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force in November 1923; he flew with the RAF from 1923. He had previously flown as a pilot from 1917 to 1919. Hawker In the mid-1920s he worked for Hawker Aircraft in north-east Surrey. Fairey He became chief designer of Fairey in 1930, succeeding Panida Antoni Ralli. In March 1933, he was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, for work on long range aircraft, when he was assistant chief designer; Sir Roy Fedden received the same honour. Fairey Aviation Company
The Fairey Aviation Company Limited was a British aircraft manufacturer of the first half of the 20th century based in Hayes in Middlesex and Heaton Chapel and RAF Ringway in Cheshire. Notable for the design of a number of important military aircraft, including the Fairey III family, the Swordfish, Firefly, and Gannet, it had a strong presence in the supply of naval aircraft, and also built bombers for the RAF. After World War II the company diversified into mechanical engineering and boat-building. The aircraft manufacturing arm was taken over by Westland Aircraft in 1960. Ickenham
Ickenham is an area in Greater London, forming the eastern part of Uxbridge and within the London Borough of Hillingdon. While no major historical events have taken place in Ickenham, settlements dating back to the Roman occupation of Britain have been discovered during archaeological surveys, and the area appears in the Domesday Book. Buildings from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries remain standing and have been restored in recent years. The village was originally split into four manors, but later there were two: Ickenham and Swakeleys. The old manorial home of Swakeleys, a 17th-century Jacobean architecture, Jacobean mansion Swakeleys House still stands, and much of the Swakeleys estate was sold for housing in the 1920s. Arthur Davenport (aeronautical Engineer)
Arthur Davenport F.R.Ae.S (9 July 1891 for Yeovil, Somerset, TNA ref: RG101/7054A/018/1 Letter Code: WOVP – 31 August 1976) was a British aircraft engineer working for Westland Aircraft in Yeovil, Somerset. When the Westland Aircraft Works was created by the Petter twins in 1915, Arthur was one of the first draughtsman to be recruited from Petter's Ltd. He was chief designer from 1919, working under the direction of Teddy Petter from May 1934 until 1944, when Petter left (to join English Electric) and Davenport became technical director. According to Harald Penrose, he was made the scapegoat for the late delivery of the Wyvern and headed into retirement in March 1952. In the 1920s, when most aircraft were biplanes, Arthur was a strong proponent of the monoplane. Most of his monoplane designs were high-winged or parasol, culminating in the Lysander. Pandia Antonio Ralli (28 June 1888 - 17 April 1930) was a British aircraft designer in the 1920s for the Fairey Aviation Company, he was responsible for the thin-bladed metal airscrews used by the Supermarine S.5 which won the 1927 Schneider Trophy and the Supermarine S.6 The Supermarine S.6 is a 1920s British single-engined single-seat racing seaplane built by Supermarine.
