Holla, Telemark
Holla was a parish, district and former municipality now located in the municipality of Nome in Telemark, Norway. History Holla is situated in the traditional region of Midt-Telemark. Holla parish included the churches at Holla and Helgen both in Telemark county. The parish of Holden (Holla) was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The municipality centre was Ulefoss. On 1 January 1964 the district of Valebø with 259 inhabitants was moved to Skien. The rest of Holla, then with 4,093 inhabitants, was merged with Lunde to form the new municipality of Nome. The name The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the Holla farm (''Holla gård'') – the biggest farm in Telemark. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Old Norse
Old Norse, Old Nordic, or Old Scandinavian, is a stage of development of North Germanic languages, North Germanic dialects before their final divergence into separate Nordic languages. Peter Høier Holtermann
Peter Høier Holtermann (16 November 1820 – 24 August 1865) was a Norwegian architect. Biography He was born in Austrått, in Ørland municipality, Sør-Trøndelag County, Norway. He was a son of assessor Ove Bjelke Holtermann (1782–1857), and a second cousin of major general Eiler Christian Holtermann, uncle of architect Ove Bjelke Holtermann and a granduncle of major general Hans Reidar Holtermann. He attended the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry before studying in Berlin from 1842 to 1846. In 1846 he returned to Norway and established an architect's office in Christiania. His designs include the Norwegian College of Agriculture, Christiania Seildugsfabrik, Tromsø city hall and Christiania Sparebank, all erected during the 1850s and 1860s. Ulefos Jernværk
Ulefos Jernværk is an iron foundry located at Ulefoss in the municipality Nome, Norway. It was established in 1657 by Ove Gjedde and Preben von Ahnen. The company produced pig iron until 1877. Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. The movement gained momentum and expanded in the first half of the 19th century, as increasingly serious and learned admirers of the neo-Gothic styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, intending to complement or even supersede the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time. Norsjø
Norsjø is a lake in the municipalities of Skien, Nome and Sauherad in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is 55 km² in area and 15 meters above sea level. Norsjø is part of the Telemark Canal. Skien
Skien () is a city and municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county in Norway. In modern times it is regarded as part of the traditional region of Grenland, although historically it belonged to Grenmar/Skiensfjorden, while Grenland referred the Norsjø area and Bø. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Skien. Skien is also the capital of Vestfold og Telemark county. Skien is one of Norway's oldest cities, with an urban history dating back to the Middle Ages, and received privileges as a market town in 1358. Lunde, Telemark
Lunde is a former municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The municipality centre was Bjervamoen. It was created by a split from Bø on 1 January 1867. At that time Lunde had a population of 2,257. On 1 January 1964 the municipality was merged with Holla municipality to form the new municipality Nome. Before the merger Lunde had a population of 3,080. At present certain interests in Lunde want to reunite with Bø. Lunde was the production site of the Troll automobile, and it is also known as the birthplace of ski racer Atle Skårdal and jazz singer Torun Eriksen. Valebø is a village in the municipality of Skien, Norway. It is located on the eastern shore of Norsjø. On the opposite side of the lake lies Ulefoss. From 1837 Valebø was administratively a part of Holla. Ulefoss
Ulefoss is the administrative centre of Nome municipality in Telemark, Norway, located near the border of Grenland. Its population is 2,699. It occupies both sides of Ulefoss falls on the river Eidselva. Ulefoss is one of Norway's oldest industrial communities, with sawmills operating from the 1400s, and mining and ironworks from the 1600s. It is still largely an industrial site, with a number of people employed in the iron foundry and mechanical industries. Ulefoss has primary school, lower secondary, and upper secondary school Søve.
