Van 't Hoff Factor
The van 't Hoff factor (named after Dutch chemist Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff) is a measure of the effect of a solute on colligative properties such as osmotic pressure, relative lowering in vapor pressure, boiling-point elevation and freezing-point depression. The van 't Hoff factor is the ratio between the actual concentration of particles produced when the substance is dissolved and the concentration of a substance as calculated from its mass. For most non-electrolytes dissolved in water, the van 't Hoff factor is essentially 1. For most ionic compounds dissolved in water, the van 't Hoff factor is equal to the number of discrete ions in a formula unit of the substance. This is true for ideal solutions only, as occasionally ion pairing occurs in solution. At a given instant a small percentage of the ions are paired and count as a single particle. Ion pairing occurs to some extent in all electrolyte solutions. This causes the measured van 't Hoff factor to ...

Van 't Hoff Equation
The Van 't Hoff equation relates the change in the equilibrium constant, , of a chemical reaction to the change in temperature, ''T'', given the standard enthalpy change, , for the process. It was proposed by Dutch chemist Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff in 1884 in his book ''Études de Dynamique chimique'' (''Studies in Dynamic Chemistry''). The Van 't Hoff equation has been widely utilized to explore the changes in state functions in a thermodynamic system. The Van 't Hoff plot, which is derived from this equation, is especially effective in estimating the change in enthalpy and entropy of a chemical reaction. Equation Summary and Uses The standard pressure, P^0, is used to define the reference state for the Van 't Hoff equation, which is where denotes natural logarithm, K_ is the thermodynamic equilibrium constant, and is the ideal gas constant. This equation is exact at any one temperature and all pressures, derived from the requirement that the Gibbs free en ...

Van't Hoff (crater)
van't Hoff is a lunar impact crater named after Dutch chemist Jacobus H. van 't Hoff and is located to the northeast of the walled plain Birkhoff, on the far side of the Moon. To the northwest is the crater Stebbins, and to the east lies the smaller Dyson. This crater lies at high northern latitudes of the lunar surface, almost two-thirds the way from the equator The equator is a circle of latitude, about in circumference, that divides Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. It is an imaginary line located at 0 degrees latitude, halfway between the North and South poles. The term can als ... to the pole. The outer rim of van't Hoff is heavily eroded and the crater has become distorted in shape by subsequent impacts. The rim edge is ill-defined in the western half where the inner wall is unusually wide. This edge may have become overlain by ejecta from other impacts to the west. Along the eastern face the crater has apparently merged with one or two ot ...

Hoff Crab
''Kiwa tyleri'', the "Hoff crab", is a species of deep-sea squat lobster in the family Kiwaidae, which lives on hydrothermal vents near Antarctica. The crustacean was given its English nickname in 2010 by UK deep-sea scientists aboard the RRS ''James Cook'', owing to resemblance between its dense covering of setae on the ventral surface of the exoskeleton and the hairy chest of the actor David Hasselhoff. The 2010 expedition to explore hydrothermal vents on the East Scotia Ridge was the second of three expeditions to the Southern Ocean by the UK led research consortium, ChEsSo (Chemosynthetic Ecosystems of the Southern Ocean). Distribution This species – the only member of its genus found outside the Pacific Ocean, is known from two sites adjacent to and on the chimney sides of hydrothermal vents in the East Scotia Ridge of the south Atlantic Ocean: from around depth at the E9 vent site and from around depth at the E2 site. Over time, this creature has adapted to the crush ...

Hoff Church
Hoff Church ( no, Hoff kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Østre Toten Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. It is located in the village of Kraby, just east of the municipal centre of Lena. It is the church for the Hoff parish which is part of the Toten prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Hamar. The white, stone church was built in a long church design during the 12th century using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 332 people. The church is known for its excellent acoustics and is often used for concerts. History Tradition states that a wooden post church or stave church was built at Hoff around the year 1021 on the orders of King Olaf II of Norway. This site had long been a site of pagan worship and when King Olav brought Christianity to Norway, a church would have been built here. Not much is known about that church. During the 11th century, the old wooden church was torn down and replaced with a new building of limestone. Th ...
