Chas Hodges
Charles Nicholas Hodges (28 December 1943 – 22 September 2018) was an English musician and singer who was the lead vocalist of musical duo Chas & Dave. Early life Hodges was born at the North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton on 28 December 1943 to Albert and Daisy Hodges. He was named Charles Nicholas, but called Chas as it was a common nickname for Charles in Hackney where his father was from. He was raised in north London, and moved to Kent in the summer of 1947. His father committed suicide just before Hodges turned four. After his father's death, the family returned to Edmonton in North London to live with his grandparents, with his mother making a living playing piano in local pubs and clubs. He attended Eldon Road School, and later Edmonton Higher Grade School but left just before he was 15 at the end of 1958. Richard Hodges, (born 29 September 1952) is a British archaeology, archaeologist and past president of The American University of Rome. A former professor and director of the Institute of World Archaeology at the University of East Anglia (1996–2007), Hodges is also the former Williams Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia (October 2007- 2012). His published research primarily concerns trade and economics during the early part of the Middle Ages in Europe. His earlier works include ''Dark Age Economics'' (1982), ''Mohammed, Charlemagne and the Origins of Europe'' (1983) and ''Light in the Dark Ages: The Rise and Fall of San Vincenzo Al Volturno'' (1997). James Hovis Hodges (born November 19, 1956) is an American businessman, attorney, and politician who served as the 114th governor of South Carolina from 1999 to 2003. James Hodges (August 11, 1822 – February 15, 1895) was an American politician and businessman. He served as Mayor of Baltimore from 1885 to 1887. Early life James Hodges was born on August 11, 1822, at Liberty Hall in Kent County, Maryland to Mary Hanson (née Ringgold) and James Hodges Sr. Hodges was descended from many settlers of Kent County. William Hodges, Hodges's ancestor, came to Maryland from Virginia around 1665 and settled on a tract of land between Gray's Inn Creek and the Chesapeake Bay named Liberty Hall. Frank Hodges (30 April 1887 – 3 June 1947) was an English trade union leader, who became General Secretary of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain. A Member of Parliament (MP) for one year, he was Civil Lord of the Admiralty in the first Labour Government. Early life Hodges was born in Woolaston in Gloucestershire in 1887, but moved to Wales at a young age. At the age of 14 he was working at the Powell Tillery Pit in Abertillery, and due to his desire to read, he came to the attention of one of the mining officials, who sponsored him to attend night school. General Courtney Hicks Hodges (January 5, 1887 – January 16, 1966) was a decorated senior officer in the United States Army who commanded First U.S. Army in the Western European Campaign of World War II. Hodges was a notable "mustang" officer, rising from private to general. Born in Perry, Georgia, he began studies at the United States Military Academy but dropped out after failing Geometry. He joined the Army in 1906 as a private, rapidly advanced into the noncommissioned officer ranks, and obtained a commission after passing a competitive examination in 1909. As a young man, Hodges served under Colonel John J. Pershing in the Pancho Villa Expedition and became part of the first rescue mission in U.S. military aviation history when he helped save a stranded aviator. He was a battalion commander in France during World War I, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism. Sir William Hodges (1808–1868) was an English barrister and legal reporter, who became in 1857 chief justice of the Cape of Good Hope. He was known also as an authority on railway law. Life The eldest son of William Hodges of Weymouth, and his wife Sarah Isaac, second daughter of William Isaac also of Weymouth, he was born at Melcombe Regis, Dorset on 29 September 1808. He educated at a private school in Salisbury and the University of London; and attended lectures of John Austin and Andrew Amos on jurisprudence and law. Hodges was called to the bar at the Inner Temple on 3 May 1833, and went the western circuit, practising at first mainly at quarter sessions.
