Hockley
Hockley is a large village and civil parish in Essex in the East of England located between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea, or, more specifically, between Rayleigh and Rochford. It came to prominence during the coming of the railway in the 1890s and at the 2001 census had a population of 13,616 people, reducing to 9,616 at the 2011 Census, many of whom commute to London. The parish of Hockley itself has a population of 8,909 (2001 census), while the urban area runs into the neighbouring parish of Hawkwell. Hockley railway station serves the village. History The place-name 'Hockley' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as ''Hocheleia''. The name means "Hocca's woodland clearing or glade". Today there is still a large wooded area named Hockley Woods. Spa Pump Room, Hockley
The Spa Pump Room is a Listed building#England and Wales, Grade II listed, early Victorian era, Victorian building in Hockley, Essex. It was built to the designs of James Lockyer (architect), James Lockyer in 1842 after a medicinal spring was discovered on the site four years earlier. Short lived, the building closed as a pump room in the early 1850s and was used for other purposes thereafter, including a Baptist chapel, billiard hall, and a clothing factory; the pump room is now in private ownership. History Robert Clay and his wife, Letitia, an ageing couple from Cheltenham, retired to Hockley in Essex, in 1838. The Clays, who had been users of Cheltenham's natural waters, rented a cottage in Hockley and dug a water well in its garden. Letitia, a chronic asthma, asthmatic, found relief in drinking the water and declared it to be medicinal; they renamed their cottage Hockley Spa Lodge. Hockley Woods
Hockley Woods is a large woodland in south-east Essex. It is a Local Nature Reserve, and parts are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is owned and managed by Rochford District Council. Hockley Woods are the largest residual area of the wildwood, which covered much of Essex after the Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. Hockley Woods comprise several contiguous named woods including Great Bull Wood, Great Hawkwell Wood, Beeches Wood, Winks Wood, Little Bull Wood, Whitbred's Wood and Parson's Snipe. The woods extend over parts of the parishes of Hockley, Hawkwell and Rayleigh. The size of the woods is variously given as 130 hectares, 109 hectares and 91.3 hectares, although the latter is the SSSI only. The woods are on pre-glacial gravels and clay. Hockley Pendant
The Hockley Pendant is a diamond-shaped, gold reliquary pendant dating from the early sixteenth century. The pendant was discovered in 2009 by four-year-old James Hyatt, while metal detecting in a field in Hockley, Essex, with his father, Jason Hyatt. The pendant is decorated on the front with an image of a female saint supporting a cross. The back of the pendant displays an image of the Five Holy Wounds of Christ, and contains a sliding panel covering an interior space, which originally held a relic. The pendant was officially declared treasure and was acquired by the British Museum. Description The Hockley pendant is a diamond-shaped gold pendant with an attached gold bail. It is in length, weighs a third of an ounce (8.68g), and has a gold content of up to 73%. The front of the pendant is engraved with the image of a female saint carrying a cross. Hockley railway station is on the Shenfield to Southend Line in the East of England, serving the village of Hockley, Essex. James Lockyer (architect)
James Lockyer (1796 – 23 May 1875), sometimes styled as John Lockyer, was an English architect and surveyor, based in London. He worked mostly in the capital but also undertook work in the provinces. Biography Lockyer served his pupillage under Robert Abraham before forming his own office. Lockyer worked mostly in London where he designed buildings in Oxford Street and New Bond Street. Perhaps his best known work in the capital was the Royal College of Chemistry in Central London in 1846, long since demolished."The Late Mr James Lockyer", ''The Builder'', 19 June 1875, p. 544. Rayleigh was a parliamentary constituency in Essex represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. It existed from 1997 to 2010. HMP Bullwood Hall
HM Prison Bullwood Hall is a former Category C women's prison and Young Offenders Institution, located in Hockley, Essex, England. The prison was operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service. History Bullwood Hall was built in the 1960s originally as a female borstal. Over time the prison also began to hold female adult prisoners. In 2002 Bullwood Hall was featured in a series of six 30 minute documentaries titled "The Real Bad Girls". Although the series portrayed the prison in a positive light, a 2005 report condemned Bullwood Hall for still using the practice of slopping out. A year later the prison was singled out for its high levels of attempted suicides and self-harm amongst inmates. Bullwood Hall continued to serve as a women's prison until 2006, when it was announced that it was to be converted into a Category C male prison, due to a shortage of male prison places. Rochford District
Rochford is a local government district in Essex, England. It is named for one of its main settlements, Rochford, though the major centre of population in the district is the town of Rayleigh. Other places in the district include Hockley, Ashingdon, Great Wakering, Canewdon and Hullbridge. It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the Rayleigh Urban District and the Rochford Rural District. Rayleigh, Essex
Rayleigh is a market town and civil parish in Essex, England; it is located between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea, east of central London. It had a population of 32,150 at the census in 2011. Toponymy The name ''Rayleigh'' is Old English in origin deriving from ''rǣge'' ('female roe-deer or she-goat') and ''lēah'' ('clearing'). Therefore, the name means overall 'wood or clearing of the wild she-goats or roe-deer". History Prehistoric and Roman times There has been a scattering of stray finds around the town from Prehistoric and Roman times, including some Roman roof and hypocaust tiles found within the fabric of Rayleigh Church. Hawkwell
Hawkwell is a village and civil parish in the district of Rochford in Essex, England. It is the second largest village after Rayleigh. The 2001 census gave a population for the parish of 11,231, increasing to 11,730 at the 2011 Census. Hawkwell is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, but not as 'Hawkwell', it appears as Hacuuella or Hechuuella. Settlement The parish includes the village itself, and also much larger suburban developments in the east (running into Rochford) and the west (running into Hockley). East and West Hawkwell are divided by the London to Southend railway line.
