Hockey New Zealand
New Zealand Hockey Federation Incorporated, also known as Hockey New Zealand, is the governing body overseeing, promoting and managing the sport of field hockey in New Zealand. It is a full member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Oceania Hockey Federation (OHF). The federation comprises 32 provincial hockey associations, organised into 8 regions, which between them had 48,174 registered players in the 2013 winter season. Origin In 1902 in Christchurch, the New Zealand Hockey Association (NZHA) was founded by six provincial associations. Later, in 1908, the New Zealand Ladies Hockey Association (NZLHA) was formed in Wellington. Until 1989, the men's and women's associations were administrated separately. Field Hockey
Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. The New Zealand men's national field hockey team, also known as the Black Sticks Men, is the national team for men's field hockey of New Zealand, under the New Zealand Hockey Federation. 2018 Women's Tri-Nations Hockey Tournament
The 2018 Women's Tri-Nations Hockey Tournament was an invitational women's field hockey competition, hosted by the New Zealand Hockey Federation. The tournament took place between 19 and 27 May 2018 in Cromwell, New Zealand. A total of three teams competed for the title. Australia won the tournament by defeating New Zealand 4–1 in the final. Japan finished in third place, after being eliminated by New Zealand in the Semi-final. New Zealand Premier Hockey League
The Sentinel Homes Premier Hockey League is a field hockey competition organised by Hockey New Zealand, which replaced the New Zealand National Hockey League. The competition serves as New Zealand's premier domestic hockey league, helping unearth future talent for selection to the country's national teams; the Black Sticks. The Central Falcons were the inaugural tournament champions in both the men's and women's editions, taking out the 2020 titles. History The Sentinel Homes Premier Hockey League was founded in 2020. Graham Shaw (field Hockey)
Graham Shaw (born 1978) is a former Ireland men's field hockey international and the current coach of the New Zealand women's national field hockey team. Between 2002 and 2009 he made 151 appearances for Ireland and also represented them at the 2007 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship. As a coach he guided the Ireland women to the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup final, winning the silver medal. As a player Shaw won Irish Senior Cup and EuroHockey Club Trophy titles with both Glenanne and Monkstown. On 9 May 2010 Shaw featured in two Irish Senior Cup finals on the same day, coaching Loreto to victory in the women's final before going onto play for Glenanne in the men's final.
