Hobie Wildcat
The Hobie Wildcat is a Formula 18 developed by Hobie Cat Europe as a one-design within the Formula 18 rules. The class was recognised by the International Sailing Federation in November 2010. It is designed to replace the Hobie Tiger as a more up to date and competitive design within the Formula 18 fleet. Formula 18
The Formula 18 class, abbreviated F18, is a non-foiling, restricted development, formula-design sport catamaran class. It was started in the early 1990s and quickly grew getting class recognition by World Sailing, with large racing fleets all over the globe. Design goals The overall objective of the class is to offer popular, safe, exciting and fair racing in 18-foot catamarans. The F18 class is a "box rule" class, which means that any boat that adheres to the limited set of general design specifications may participate in all F18 races. This has led to a score of homebuilders and professional builders to design their own F18 boats and race them in this class. However, it is the mainstream production F18 designs that have dominated the top of the class. The presence of multiple boat builders and sailmakers in the class stimulates innovation and helps to limit costs to sailors. Multihull
A multihull is a boat or ship with more than one hull, whereas a vessel with a single hull is a monohull. The most common multihulls are catamarans (with two hulls), and trimarans (with three hulls). There are other types, with four or more hulls, but such examples are very rare and tend to be specialised for particular functions. Sailing multihulls Counter-intuitively, it is unhelpful to think of the design progression to be "1-2-3", namely monohull - catamaran - trimaran; rather, it is "1-3-2". A sailing trimaran is, in effect, a modified monohull with lightweight outrigger hulls (or "amas") for stability instead of a heavy deep keel; so it follows that a sailing trimaran will be lighter and faster than a sailing monohull. Fiberglass Molding
Fiberglass molding is a process in which fiberglass reinforced resin plastics are formed into useful shapes. The process usually involves first making a mold and then using the mold to make the fiberglass component. Mold making The fiberglass mold process begins with an object known as the plug or buck. This is an exact representation of the object to be made. The plug can be made from a variety of materials, usually certain types of foam. After the plug has been formed, it is sprayed with a mold release agent. The release agent will allow the mold to be separated from the plug once it is finished. The mold release agent is a special wax, and/or PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol). Polyvinyl alcohol, however, is said to have negative effects on the final mold's surface finish. Once the plug has its release agent applied, gelcoat is applied with a roller, brush or specially-designed spray gun. Sandwich-structured Composite
A sandwich-structured composite is a special class of composite materials that is fabricated by attaching two thin but stiff skins to a lightweight but thick core. The core material is normally low strength material, but its higher thickness provides the sandwich composite with high bending stiffness with overall low density. Open- and closed-cell-structured foams like polyethersulfone polyvinylchloride, polyurethane, polyethylene or polystyrene foams, balsa wood, syntactic foams, and honeycombs are commonly used core materials. Sometimes, the honeycomb structure is filled with other foams for added strength. Open- and closed-cell metal foam can also be used as core materials. A Bermuda rig, Bermudian rig, or Marconi rig is a configuration of Mast (sailing), mast and rigging for a type of sailboat and is the typical configuration for most modern sailboats. Centerboard
A centreboard or centerboard (US) is a retractable hull appendage which pivots out of a slot in the hull of a sailboat, known as a ''centreboard trunk'' (UK) or ''centerboard case'' (US). The retractability allows the centreboard to be raised to operate in shallow waters, to move the centre of lateral resistance (offsetting changes to the sailplan that move the centre of effort aft), to reduce drag when the full area of the centreboard is not needed, or when removing the boat from the water, as when trailering. A centreboard which consists of solely a pivoting metal plate is called a centerplate. A daggerboard is similar but slides vertically rather than pivoting. Hobie Cat
Hobie Cat is a company that manufactures sailing catamarans, surfboards, sailboats, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and pedalboards as the Hobie Cat Company. It was founded in 1961 by Hobart Alter, who originally manufactured surfboards. Its line of products has included more than twenty sailing craft, plus a variety of other watercraft. History Hobie Cat was founded by Hobart Alter. Initially a surfboard manufacturer in the late 1950s, in 1961 Alter's focus changed to designing an easily beached fiberglass catamaran. The Hobie Tiger or Hobie Tiger 18, is a French catamaran sailboat that was designed by Hobie Cat Europe as a Formula 18 racer and first built in 1995. The boat is an International Sailing Federation recognized international class. Production The design was built by Hobie Cat Europe in France, starting in 1995 and later by the parent company Hobie Cat in the United States in 2001, but it is now out of production. Design The Hobie Tiger is a sailing dinghy, with the twin hulls built predominantly of polyester fiberglass sandwich with a foam core. The hulls have plumb stems and transoms, transom-hung rudders controlled by a single tiller and twin retractable daggerboards.
