Ben Hoberman
Bernard Gilbert "Ben" Hoberman (July 21, 1922 – May 3, 2014) was an American radio executive credited with pioneering the all-talk format by launching it at KABC (AM) in Los Angeles, California in 1960. Biography Hoberman was born to a Jewish family in Chisholm, Minnesota. His first job in radio was as an announcer at a station in Hibbing, Minnesota when he was 18. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to the Armed Forces Network in Europe. After the war, he worked as general manager at several stations in the Midweast, including a stint as station manager of WDET-FM in Detroit, a public service station owned by the United Auto Workers, before becoming general manager of WABC radio in New York City. In 1960, he took over as general manager of KABC radio in Los Angeles and originated the all-talk format. The format was highly successful and would spread throughout the United States in the 1970s. Chuck Hoberman (born 1956) is an artist, engineer, architect, and inventor of folding toys and structures, most notably the Hoberman sphere. Early life and education Hoberman's father was an architect, and his mother, Mary Ann Hoberman, was a children's book author. He wanted to be an artist from an early age, doing drawing and painting, and eventually taking courses at Cooper Union in New York City. He studied liberal arts at Brown University, and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in sculpture from Cooper Union in 1979, and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. Mary Ann Hoberman (August 12, 1930 – July 7, 2023) was an American author of over 30 children's books. Biography Early life Hoberman was born on August 12, 1930, in Stamford, Connecticut, but because her father changed jobs frequently, her family moved to New York City, New Jersey, New Haven, Connecticut, and eventually back to Stamford. Hoberman had a love for books from a young age, although she had few growing up during the Great Depression. Perry Hoberman (born 1954), is an installation artist who has worked extensively with machines and media. His career has included stints with Laurie Anderson and the USC Interactive Media Division. He has taught at the Cooper Union School of Art, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the graduate Computer Art Department in the school of Visual Arts in New York. Hoberman Arch
The Hoberman Arch was the centerpiece of the Olympic Medals Plaza in downtown Salt Lake City during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Following the Olympics the arch was moved to the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Cauldron Park where, along with the Olympic cauldron, it was one of the main highlights and an important part of Salt Lake's Olympic legacy. In August 2014, the arch was removed from the park and a new public display location has not yet been found. Design and history The arch was designed by Chuck Hoberman to be used as a mechanical curtain for the Olympic Medal Plaza's stage.
