Hobbs Municipal Schools (HMS) is a school district based in Hobbs, New Mexico. In addition to Hobbs it serves Monument, Nadine, and North Hobbs. History Circa 2015 the number of students increased to 10,000, but declined after a decline in the oil market. In October 2017 the number of students was at 10,070. In early 2019, when the 2018-2019 school year ended, the student count was 10,341. This increased to 10,615 five days after the beginning of the subsequent school year, in fall 2019. In 2020, because schools in New Mexico ended in-person learning because of the COVID-19 pandemic and because Texas schools in general had better academic reputations than New Mexican schools, several New Mexico students moved to Texas. That same year, enrollment figures were down by 1,232. By 2022 the school district's enrollment was on an upward trajectory. Hobbs is a city in Lea County, New Mexico, Lea County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 40,508 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, increasing from 34,122 in 2010. Hobbs is the principal city of the Hobbs, New Mexico micropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Lea County. History Hobbs was founded in 1907 when James Isaac Hobbs (1852–1923) established a Homestead principle, homestead and named the settlement. In 1910, the Hobbs post office opened, with James Hobbs as the first postmaster. By 1911, there were about 25 landowners in Hobbs.[ The small, isolated settlement expanded rapidly following the discovery of oil by the Midwest Oil Company in 1927. A refinery was built the following year, and in 1929, the town of Hobbs was officially incorporated. At the peak of this oil boom, over 12,000 people lived in Hobbs. The Hobbs News-Sun is a daily newspaper published Tuesday through Sunday in Hobbs, New Mexico, featuring news, sports and other features of interest to readers in Lea County. The News-Sun was the result of a merger between two of the many local newspapers that appeared in Hobbs in the 1930s, following the region's oil boom at that time. Competition fell away until only the News-Sun and the Hobbs Flare remained. The Flare was sold to Golden West Free Press in 1993 and was sold to Sun Publishing of Lake Charles, La., in December 1996. It was closed in December 1997. Sun Publishing also owns the Hobbs News-Sun. COVID-19 Pandemic In New Mexico
The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached the U.S. state of New Mexico on March 11, 2020. On December 23, 2020, the New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,174 new COVID-19 cases and 40 deaths, bringing the cumulative statewide totals to 133,242 cases and 2,243 deaths since the start of the pandemic. During the last quarter of 2020, COVID-19 hospitalizations in New Mexico increased, reaching a peak of 947 hospitalizations on December 3. The most populous counties in the state have seen the largest number of infections, but by mid-April, the northwest counties of McKinley and San Juan became the most infected areas in the state, with Sandoval County also seeing a high infection rate. Hobbs High School (HHS) is located in Hobbs, New Mexico, United States. It had a student population of about 1900 students as of 2017. In addition to Hobbs it serves Monument, Nadine, and North Hobbs. Ralph Tasker coached basketball at HHS for 49 years, from 1949 to 1998. Campus The school has a fairly standard indoor campus with several classrooms that can be entered from the outside. It also has a new auditorium and athletic center. Until May 2002, Hobbs freshmen went to one of three junior high schools: Highland, Houston, or Heizer. All three housed 7th through 9th grade. The decision was made to convert Heizer Junior High School into a freshman high school to help transition 9th grade students into high school curriculum and behavioral expectations.
