HiveColab is an innovation hub and startup incubator in Kampala, Uganda. The space was founded in 2010 and is noted as being one of Africa's first innovation hubs of note along with the IHub. HiveColab was founded by African technologist and Appfrica CEO Jon Gosier, Senegalese Born, British Businesswoman Marieme Jamme, Daniel Stern, Teddy Ruge and supported by Director Barbara Birungi. Appfrica
Appfrica (sometimes referred to as Appfrica Labs) is a market research and technology firm founded by current CEO Jon Gosier in 2008 in Kampala, Uganda. The firm has been responsible for a number of technology initiatives responsible for promoting Africa's technology sector including HiveColab, Apps4Africa, HiveColab, QuestionBox and for helping Google Africa translate its page for Ugandan audiences. Appfrica helps multinational firms do business in African markets by helping them understand consumer behavior, find local partners, and hire local talent. Incubation, Apps4Africa, and HiveColab Appfrica is one of the oldest technology incubators in Africa, founded in 2008. Jon Gosier
Jonathan D. "Jon" Gosier (born 1981 or 1982) is a software developer, investor, and philanthropist. He was named as one of Ten African Tech Voices to Follow on Twitter by CNN and one of the 25 most influential African-Americans in Technology by Business Insider. He was awarded a TED Fellowship in 2009 and later named a TED Senior Fellow. Jon is Knight News Challenge award winner for Abayima which makes crisis communications technology for disasters. In 2013 Gosier was nominated as one of three Innovators of the Year by Black Enterprise Magazine for his work with data startup MetaLayer. Barbara Birungi
Barbara (Birungi) Mutabazi (born 7 August 1986) is a female technologist. She is a co-founder and founding manager of HiveColab in Kampala, Uganda. She is the founder oWomen in Technology Uganda an initiative aimed at helping women and girls pursue technology careers. Prior to Hive Colab, Mutabazi was a member of staff at the African technology firm Appfrica. Education Barbara graduated with honors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management, where she earned her MBA. She also holds a master's degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Salford in Manchester, UK, and a bachelor's degree in Business Computing from Makerere University. Additionally, she received a postgraduate degree in Project Planning and Management. IndigoTrust
The Indigo Trust is a UK-based grant-making foundation operating from London and is one of the organizations that makes up the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. It funds technology-driven projects to bring about social change, largely in African countries. The Trust focuses mainly on innovation, transparency and citizen empowerment and provides funding of approximately £500,000 a year. Afrilabs
AfriLabs is a pan-African innovation-focused organisation that works with over 400 innovation hubs in 53 countries and other stakeholders to raise successful startups and entrepreneurs that are developing and deploying innovative solutions to African problems through the adoption of technologies. History AfriLabs was founded in 2011 with five organizations: Nailab Kenya, iHub Kenya, HiveColab Uganda, ActivSpaces Cameroun and Banta Labs Senegal. IHub
iHub is an Innovation hub and hacker space for the technology community in Nairobi. It was started in March 2010 by Erik Hersman, a blogger, TED fellow, and entrepreneur and acquired by Co-creation Hub (CcHUB) in 2019. This coworking space, in Senteu Plaza at the junction of Lenana and Galana Roads, is a nexus for technologists, investors, young entrepreneurs, designers, researchers and programmers. iHub was a pioneering tech hub in Africa, but in 2014 was one of many technology hubs across the continent, with a dozen in Nairobi in 2015, and NaiLab operating within the same building until March 2017. Marieme Jamme
Marieme is a Senegalese-American singer-songwriter with a multi-octave voice whose music has R&B, pop and jazz influences. Her musical themes reflect her youth affected by war and her subsequent world travels. She has released one EP, one acoustic visual EP, and her songs have been used in several television shows and in film. Early life Marieme Diop was born in Nouakchott, Mauritania, Africa where her father was an executive at a regional electrical company. Hivos provides support to civil society organizations working in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. History Hivos emerged out of the organised humanist movement in the decades following the establishment of Humanists International in Amsterdam in 1952, as a culmination of Dutch humanists' growing desire to have a meaningful social impact through international development.
