The Hit Network is an Australian commercial radio network owned and operated by Southern Cross Austereo. The network consists of 41 radio stations broadcasting a hot adult contemporary music format, as well as 6 Digital radio in Australia, digital radio stations. History The Hit Network was formed in 1986 as the Austereo Network after Austereo, the licensee of Adelaide commercial radio station SAFM, purchased Fox FM (Melbourne), Fox FM in Melbourne. The network grew throughout the late 1980s and the 1990s, acquiring B105 FM, B105 Brisbane, 2Day FM Sydney and Hit 92.9, PMFM Perth, as well as establishing joint-venture stations in Hit104.7 Canberra, Canberra and Hit106.9 Newcastle, Newcastle. Sea FM
Sea FM was an Australia, Australian radio network, consisting of stations in Queensland and NSW owned by Southern Cross Austereo. Some Sea FM stations were later sold to meet media ownership requirements. Prime Media Group Limited, Prime Television Limited purchased Zinc Rocks (Townsville), Sea FM Townsville in Queensland and Grant Broadcasters purchased Sea FM stations in Devonport, Tasmania, Devonport and Burnie in Tasmania. All Sea FM stations currently owned by Southern Cross Austereo except Cairns, Mackay, Queensland, Mackay and Rockhampton / Gladstone, Queensland, Gladstone, are part of the Hit Network after Southern Cross Media merged with Austereo. The brand was created by NOVA Entertainment, then known as DMG Regional Radio, in 1999, with the network being sold to Southern Cross Austereo. Programming The network's stations are aimed at the under-35 section of the market, playing Top 40 and popular music. For most stations, the only local program heard on these stations is the breakfast programme, with Alo Baker's Workday networked from the Gold Coast Media Centre, and drive/nights programming coming from the Southern Cross Austereo's metropolitan stations Fox FM in Melbourne and 2Day FM in Sydney. Triple M Perth (official callsign: 6MMM) is a commercial radio station owned and operated by Southern Cross Austereo as part of the Triple M network. The station is broadcast to Perth, Western Australia from studios in Subiaco. The station commenced broadcasting in 1937 as 6PM, initially on the AM band at a frequency of 1000 kilohertz, before converting to the FM band as 6PM-FM on 31 December 1990. The station was later branded as PMFM, The All New 92.9, 92.9 and Hit 92.9. On 1 December 2020, the station was relaunched as Triple M, switching network affiliation with sister station Mix 94.5. On 15 December 2016, the network was amalgamated with the LocalWorks network of regional radio stations. History The first Triple M station was Triple M Sydney, which commenced broadcasting to Sydney on 2 August 1980. Triple M Sydney and then-rival 2Day FM were the first commercial FM radio stations in Sydney.
