History Of Professional Soccer In Seattle
Seattle has had professional soccer clubs for over four decades who have played in various leagues since the 1970s. These include three incarnations of the Seattle Sounders FC, playing in the North American Soccer League, United Soccer League, and Major League Soccer. The city is also home to Seattle Reign FC, which began in 2013 as a founding member of the National Women's Soccer League. Seattle has also hosted teams from the Continental Indoor Soccer League and the Major Arena Soccer League. Tacoma Stars (1983–1992)
The Tacoma Stars were an American professional indoor soccer team that played in the Major Indoor Soccer League from 1983 to 1992. They played at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. The team was established in 1983 from the defunct Denver Avalanche. The Stars hold the record for the largest crowd to witness an indoor soccer game—21,728 people—from game 7 of the 1987 MISL Championship, which they lost to the Dallas Sidekicks in overtime. Tacoma was the only team in MISL history to defeat the perennial champion San Diego Sockers in a MISL playoff series. Seattle Pilots
The Seattle Pilots were an American professional baseball, professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington (state), Washington during the 1969 Major League Baseball season. Denver Dynamos
The Denver Dynamos were a soccer team based in Denver that played in the NASL from 1974 to 1975. Their home field was Mile High Stadium. Jimmy Gabriel
James Gabriel (10 October 1940 – 10 July 2021) was a Scottish football defensive midfielder and defender who earned two caps with the Scotland national football team. Chiefly associated with English clubs Everton and Southampton, Gabriel played extensively in Scotland and England before ending his career with the Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League. John Best (soccer)
John Best (11 July 1940 – 5 October 2014) was an American international soccer defender. He spent six seasons in the North American Soccer League where he was a five-time first team All Star. He later coached the NASL Seattle Sounders and served as the general manager of the Sounders and the Vancouver Whitecaps. He also earned one cap with the U.S. national team in 1973. Playing Best began his career in England. He played for Liverpool in 1959 under the new manager, Bill Shankly, after which he played seven games with Tranmere Rovers in 1960.
