is a genre of film, television, video game, and theatre in Japan. Literally meaning "period dramas", they are most often set during the Edo period of Japanese history, from 1603 to 1868. Some, however, are set much earlier—''Portrait of Hell'', for example, is set during the late Heian period—and the early Meiji era is also a popular setting. Eiichi Kudo
was a Japanese film director. Kudo directed 30 films between 1956 and 1998. His notable films are ''13 Assassins (1963 film), 13 Assassins'' (1963) and ''The Great Killing'' (1964). He joined the Toei Company, Toei film company in 1952 and made his film director debut with ''Fukaku hichō'' in 1959. His 1982 film ''Yaju-deka'' was entered into the 33rd Berlin International Film Festival. Kudo directed a lot of television dramas and he directed more than 50 episodes of the popular television jidaigeki Hissatsu series. He died of Intracerebral hemorrhage on September 23, 1999. Koreyoshi Kurahara
(31 May 1927 – 28 December 2002) was a Japanese screenwriter and director. He is perhaps best known for directing ''Antarctica'' (1983), which won several awards and was entered into the 34th Berlin International Film Festival. He also co-directed ''Hiroshima'' (1995) with Roger Spottiswoode, which was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries. Ken Ogata
, better known by his stage name , was a Japanese actor. Life Ogata was born in Tokyo, Japan. Ogata is well known for his roles in Peter Greenaway's ''The Pillow Book'', Paul Schrader's '' Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters'' and Shohei Imamura's '' The Ballad of Narayama''. He won the award for best actor at the 26th Blue Ribbon Awards for ''Okinawan Boys''. In television, his starring role as Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 1965 NHK Taiga drama ''Taikōki'' catapulted him to fame. Ken went on to many prominent roles in subsequent programs. Judy Ongg
Judy Ongg (; born 24 January 1950) is a Taiwanese-Japanese singer, actress, author, and woodblock-print artist. Born in Taipei, she graduated from Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, and after which, she became a naturalized Japanese citizen. Her career has spanned more than four decades. Biography Ongg made her film debut in the 1961 Japan-U.S. production '' The Big Wave'', based on the Pearl S. Buck novel. Isuzu Yamada
was a Japanese stage and screen actress whose career spanned seven decades. Biography Yamada was born in Osaka as Mitsu Yamada, the daughter of Kusudu Yamada, a shinpa actor specialising in onnagata roles, and Ritsu, a geisha. Under her mother's influence, she began learning nagauta and Japanese traditional dance from the age of six. Yamada debuted as a film actress in 1930 at age twelve, appearing in the Nikkatsu film ''Tsurugi wo koete'' opposite Denjirō Ōkōchi. She soon became one of Nikkatsu's top actresses, but it was her portrayals of strong-willed modern girls in Kenji Mizoguchi's ''Osaka Elegy'' and '' Sisters of the Gion'' in 1936 at the new Daiichi Eiga studio that earned her popularity and critical acclaim.
