Alger Hiss
Alger Hiss (November 11, 1904 – November 15, 1996) was an American government official accused in 1948 of having spied for the Soviet Union in the 1930s. Statutes of limitations had expired for espionage, but he was convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950. Before the trial Hiss was involved in the establishment of the United Nations, both as a U.S. State Department official and as a U.N. official. In later life he worked as a lecturer and author. On August 3, 1948, Whittaker Chambers, a former U.S. Communist Party member, testified under subpoena before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) that Hiss had secretly been a communist while in federal service. Hiss categorically denied the charge and subsequently sued Chambers for libel. During the pretrial discovery process of the libel case, Chambers produced new evidence allegedly indicating that he and Hiss had been involved in espionage. Anna Hiss
Dr. Anna Hiss (1893–1972) was a 20th-century American professor, instrumental in improving the field of physical education by professionalizing the field, establishing university degrees, and developing programs for preparing physical education teachers. She was also professor of physical education at the University of Texas at Austin, as well as older sister of Donald Hiss and Alger Hiss. Background Anna Hiss was born on May 11, 1893, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Mary "Minnie" Lavinia (née Hughes) and Charles Alger Hiss. August Hiss
August Hiss was a Swiss footballer who played one season for FC Basel. He played in the position as striker. Hiss joined Basel's first team before the 1931–32 season and made his domestic league debut for the club in the home game at the Landhof on 27 September 1931 as Basel lost 0–6 against Urania Genève Sport. He scored his first goal for his club on 25 October in the away game against Zürich. But his goal could not save Basel from a 4–1 defeat. In that season Hiss played a total of 18 games for Basel scoring a total of 10 goals. Nine of these games were in the Swiss Serie A, three in the Swiss Cup and six were friendly games. He scored three goal in the domestic league, three in the cup competition and the other four were scored during the test games. Arlene Hiss
Arlene Hiss (born 1954 according to Mortorsport Database or born 1941) is an American former race car driver and schoolteacher. Hiss has the distinction of being the first woman to start an Indy car race, doing so in the 1976 season. She is the ex-wife of 1972 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Mike Hiss. Personal life Hiss worked as a dance teacher at Fullerton High School in Fullerton, California, and was married to Mike Hiss, 1972 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, although by the time of her USAC career they were no longer married.
