''His Secretary'' is a 1925 American silent comedy film directed by Hobart Henley. The film stars Norma Shearer and Lew Cody. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Ruth, a young woman who is in love with her employer but is ignored by him and all other men, learns the reason for her unpopularity while she is on a trip as her employer’s secretary. She overhears her boss saying he would not kiss her for a thousand dollars. After their return, and after a change in her character and outlook, her employer attempts to make love to her. She rejects him in a manner that piques him, and later he declares his love for her. Hobart Henley
Hobart Henley (born Hess Manassah Henle; November 23, 1887 – May 22, 1964) was an American silent film actor, Film director, director, screenwriter and producer. He was involved in over 60 films either as an actor or director or both in his twenty-year career, between 1914 and 1934 when he retired from filmmaking. Early life Henley was born Hess Manassah Henle in Louisville, Kentucky, to Samuel Henle, a German immigrant and retailer, and his wife Clementine. His father moved the family to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Henley later attended and graduated from the University of Cincinnati. Career Henley began his career as a stage actor, then moved to acting in silent films. He began dual duties of directing and acting in such films as ''The Gay Old Dog'' for Pathé in 1919. Donald Reed (born Ernesto Avila Guillen; July 23, 1901 – February 28, 1973) was a Mexican film actor, and later, Beverly Hills video consultant. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1925 and 1940. Biography Reed was born in Mexico City as Ernesto Avila Guillen, the son of Alberto Guillen, a shoe merchant. His name was changed to Ernest Gillen when he signed with Universal. When he later signed with First National, his name was changed to Donald Reed. He married the beauty pageant winner Janet Eastman and the two had one daughter together, Joy. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico and died in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." Mabel Van Buren
Mabel Van Buren (born Mabel Brown Southard; July 17, 1878 – November 4, 1947) was an American stage and screen actress. Biography As a theatrical performer she played the leading lady in both ''The Virginian'' and ''The Squaw Man'' (1909). Van Buren became prominent in motion pictures at the time of the development of feature-length movies in 1914. She starred in '' The Girl of the Golden West'' (1915) under the direction of Cecil B. Demille. It was Demille who brought Mabel west to Hollywood. Mabel was the first leading lady of the Famous Players-Lasky studio on Vine Street in Hollywood, California. Her final role of note was in ''Neighbor's Wives'' (1933) in which she played ''Mrs. Lee''. She continued acting in movies until the death of her husband, James Gordon.
