Hiroyuki Kitakubo
is a Japanese director, animator, and screenwriter. Kitakubo began work in the anime industry as a teenager, having worked on the 1979 ''Mobile Suit Gundam'' television series. He debuted as a director with the ''Cream Lemon'' episode "Pop Chaser" in 1985, then worked on films including ''Black Magic M-66'' with Masamune Shirow and '' Akira'' with Katsuhiro Otomo. Kitakubo went on to direct the "A Tale of Two Robots" segment from ''Robot Carnival'', the original video animation (OVA) series '' Golden Boy'', and the films ''Roujin Z'' and '' Blood: The Last Vampire''. In 2001, Kitakubo won the "Individual Award" at The 6th Animation Kobe for the latter film. Masamune Shirow
, better known by his pen name , is a Japanese manga artist. Shirow is best known for the manga ''Ghost in the Shell'', which has since been turned into three theatrical anime films, two anime television series, an anime television movie, an anime ONA series, a theatrical live action movie, and several video games. Life and career Born in the Hyōgo Prefecture capital city of Kobe, he studied oil painting at Osaka University of Arts. While in college, he developed an interest in manga, which led him to create his own complete work, ''Black Magic'', which was published in the manga ''dōjinshi'' ''Atlas''. His work caught the eye of Seishinsha President Harumichi Aoki, who offered to publish him. The result was best-selling manga '' Appleseed'', a full volume of densely plotted drama taking place in an ambiguous future. The story was a sensation, and won the 1986 Seiun Award for Best Manga. The Japan Media Arts Festival is an annual festival held since 1997 by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs. The festival begins with an open competition and culminates with the awarding of several prizes and an exhibition. Based on judging by a jury of artistic peers, awards are given in four categories: Art (formerly called Non-Interactive Digital Art), Entertainment (formerly called Interactive Art; including video games and websites), animation, and manga. Within each category, one Grand Prize, four Excellence Prizes, and (since 2002) one Encouragement Prize are awarded. Other outstanding works, are selected by the Jury as Jury Selections.
