Takayuki Mikami
is a Japanese master of Shotokan karate based in the United States of America. He holds the rank of 9th '' dan'' black belt in the art, awarded under the Japan Karate Association. In 1958, Mikami tied for first place in the All Japan Karate Championships. The following year, he became the All Japan champion in '' kumite'' (sparring) as well as ''kata'' (patterns). In 1961, Mikami won first place in ''kata'' again. He was also the first person to graduate from the Japan Karate Association's (JKA) instructor training program instituted by Gichin Funakoshi and Masatoshi Nakayama. This is a list of some of the larger Shotokan karate organizations and associations in order by year of establishment. International Japan Karate-Do Association lead by Shihan Sadasige Kato. Its headquarters is situated in Tokyo, Japan, though its main activities are based on Europe. Shotokai The name "Shotokai" is used as a synonym for the Shotokan ryu association ''Dai Nihon Karate-do Shotokai''. It is the Shotokan Karate association established by Gichin Funakoshi originally in 1930. Shotokai association is the keeper of master Funakoshi's Karate-do heritage. Karate Union Of Great Britain
The Karate Union of Great Britain, or KUGB, is an association of Shotokan Karate clubs and Karateka operating across Great Britain, with some oversea affiliations. The 1960s saw a growth in the popularity of Karate, and the KUGB was founded in 1966 to be a democratic, not-for-profit organisation, and was the first single style organisation within the UK. Many other British Shotokan Karate organisations have since formed after splitting from the KUGB. The KUGB is currently affiliated to the European Shotokan Karate Association (ESKA) and the World Shotokan Karate Association (WSKA). The KUGB operated as the British arm of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) until the death of chief instructor Keinosuke Enoeda Sensei in 2003.
