Hiram Gray
Hiram Gray (July 10, 1801 in Salem, Washington County, New York – May 6, 1890 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician from New York who served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1837 to 1839. He was also a judge at both the federal and state levels. Education He graduated from Union College in 1821. Then he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1823, and commenced practice in Elmira, New York. US Congress Gray was elected as a Democrat to the 25th United States Congress, and served from March 4, 1837, to March 3, 1839. New York state judiciary He was Judge of the Sixth Judicial District from 1846 to 1847. He was a justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1847 to 1859, and was ex officio a judge of the New York Court of Appeals in 1851 and 1859. He was a Commissioner of Appeals from 1870 to 1875. Salem (town), New York
Salem is a town in eastern Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town population was 2,702 at the 2000 census. The town of Salem contains a hamlet also named Salem, formerly an incorporated village. History Salem was first settled in 1761 by Joshua Conkey and James Turner, who as soldiers in the French and Indian War, passed through the territory. In 1764, Alexander and James Turner acquired a patent which was soon divided up between the New Englanders from Pelham, Massachusetts and a group of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, led by Dr Thomas Clark from Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland. The Charlotte County and White Creek militia used Salem as its base in 1776. The 123rd Volunteer Regiment was recruited from Salem during the Civil War. A third-party beneficiary, in the law of contracts, is a person who may have the right to sue on a contract, despite not having originally been an active party to the contract. Union College is a private liberal arts college in Schenectady, New York. Amasa Dana
Amasa Dana (October 19, 1792 – December 24, 1867) was an American lawyer and politician who served two non-consecutive terms as a U.S. Representative from New York from 1839 to 1841, and from 1843 to 1845. Biography Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Dana was the son of Aziel Dana and Rebecca (Cory) Dana. He attended private schools and Dana Academy in Wilkes-Barre, studied law with his uncle Eleazer Dana in Owego, New York, attained admission to the bar in 1817 and practiced in Owego. Political career Dana moved to Ithaca, New York in 1821 and continued the practice of law. He served as district attorney of Tompkins County from 1823 to 1837. He served as member of the New York State Assembly in 1828 and 1829. He served as president and trustee of the village of Ithaca in 1835, 1836, and 1839.
