Hillcrest Country Club, also known as Avalon Country Club, is a historic country club located in suburban Lawrence Township, Marion County, Indiana, northeast of Indianapolis, Indiana. The 18 hole golf course was designed by Bill Diddel and was built in 1924. The clubhouse was built in 1929–1930, and renovated in 2000. It is a three-story, Mission Revival style with tall arched openings, and a low tile roof with bracketed eaves. Also on the property are the contributing swimming pool (1934), well house (c. 1940), and water pump (c. 1935). Lawrence Township is one of nine townships in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 118,447 at the 2010 United States Census. Lawrence Township was organized in 1822. Bill Diddel
William H. Diddel (1884 – February 25, 1985) was an American amateur golfer and golf course designer. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Diddel designed approximately three hundred golf courses, primarily in the midwest United States, beginning with Ulen Country Club in Lebanon, Indiana. Diddel designed the golf course at Northwood Club in Dallas, Texas, which was the site of the 1952 U.S. Open. Diddel was one of the founders and a charter member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. He was elected president of that body in 1954. The Mission Revival style was part of an architectural movement, beginning in the late 19th century, for the revival and reinterpretation of American colonial styles. Mission Revival drew inspiration from the late 18th and early 19th century Spanish missions in California. It is sometimes termed California Mission Revival, particularly when used elsewhere, such as in New Mexico and Texas which have their own unique regional architectural styles.
