Hildred Blewett
Myrtle Hildred Blewett (born Myrtle Hildred Hunt; 28 May 1911 – 13 June 2004) was a Canadian accelerator physicist. Early life and education Blewett was born on 28 May 1911 in Toronto, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 1935 with a BA in physics and mathematics. In 1938, Blewett joined Cornell University as a graduate student, with Hans Bethe as her thesis supervisor. Career Blewett started her career at General Electric, where she devised a technique for controlling smoke pollution from factory chimneys in the 1940s. She and her husband John Blewett were part of the initial team at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She then worked at Argonne National Laboratory before joining CERN in 1969. Following her retirement from CERN in 1977, Blewett retired to Vancouver. She died on 13 June 2004, and was commemorated by CERN colleagues Maria Fidecaro and Christine Sutton. Hildred Mary Butler (9 October 1906 – 8 April 1975) was an Australian microbiologist. Life The daughter of Archie Butler, a farmer, and Rose Josephine Hancock, his wife, she was born in Elsternwick, Melbourne and was educated at Lauriston Girls' School, going on to earn a BSc and DSc from the University of Melbourne. From 1928 to 1938, she was bacteriologist for the Baker Medical Research Institute. From 1938 to 1971, she was bacteriologist at the Royal Women's Hospital. During that time, she helped establish a 24/7 bacteriological service at the hospital. Sir Edward Hildred Carlile, 1st Baronet, (10 July 1852 – 26 September 1942) was an English businessman and Conservative Party politician. Early life Born in Richmond, Surrey, in 1852, Carlile was educated at St Albans School and abroad. He made his career in business and politics. In business he was a partner in the firm of Jonas Brook & Brothers, Meltham Mills, Huddersfield. This firm later merged with J. & P. Coats Limited (now Coats plc), and he became a Director of that company. Politics He stood unsuccessfully in Huddersfield at the 1900 general election. Hildred Storey Geertz (February 12, 1927 – September 30, 2022) was an American anthropologist who has studied Balinese and Javanese people, Javanese kinship practices and Balinese art in Indonesia. Between 1960 and 1970, Geertz served as a research scholar, a lecturer, and an assistant professor of social anthropology at the University of Chicago. Since 1970, she has been teaching in the Anthropology department at Princeton University. She was named professor emerita in 1998. Hildred R. Goodwine Phillips usually known professionally as Hildred Goodwine (March 12, 1918 – December 27, 1998) was an artist, sculptor and illustrator best known for her paintings of horses, western scenes and animals. Life Born March 12, 1918 as Hildred R. Ferstle to parents Charles and Ruby Ferstle in Wayne, Michigan, Goodwine died in Wickenburg, Arizona after having lived in Arizona for 46 years. She grew up on a farm in Michigan, and ranched in Kansas before settling in Arizona where she owned and ran a ranch with her husband from 1958 until 1965. Florence Taylor Hildred (1865–1932) was the first female member of Leeds Astronomical Society and later a pastor for the Unity Society of Practical Christianity in Sacramento, California, Sacramento, US, where she was the first woman in the city to conduct a marriage ceremony. Early life Florence was born in Leeds in November 1865, she was the daughter of Charles Henry Taylor, a wealthy Foundry, iron foundry owner. She may have trained as a school teacher. Wayne Hildred (born 12 September 1955) is a New Zealand former racing cyclist. He won the Australian national road race title in 1982 and 1986. Although he raced predominantly in Australia he rode as a New Zealander in all races he entered. After a break of 19 years Hildred raced the New Zealand masters Championships where he finished first.
