Hildegarde Kneeland
Hildegarde Kneeland (July 10, 1889 – September 15, 1994) was an American home economist and social statistician, known for her time-use research. Education and early career Kneeland was born in Brooklyn, studied at the Packer Collegiate Institute, and graduated from Vassar College in 1911. After graduate study at Teachers College, Columbia University, she taught nutrition at the University of Missouri beginning in 1914. In 1917 she returned to graduate study at the University of Chicago, working there with Hazel Kyrk. She taught at Barnard College from 1918 to 1919, and at Kansas State Agricultural College from 1919 to 1922. At Kansas State, she headed the department of household economics. After beginning her government work, she completed a doctorate in 1930 at the Robert Brookings Graduate School of Economics and Government at Washington University in St. Louis. Hildegarde Loretta Sell, known as Hildegarde (February 1, 1906 – July 29, 2005) was an American cabaret singer, who was well known for the song "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup". Early life She was born Hildegarde Loretta Sell in Adell, Wisconsin, and raised in New Holstein, Wisconsin, as a Roman Catholic in a family of German extraction. She trained at Marquette University's College of Music in the 1920s. Vaudeville and cabaret Hildegarde worked in vaudeville and traveling shows throughout her career, appearing across the United States and Europe. She was known for 70 years as The Incomparable Hildegarde, a title bestowed on her by columnist Walter Winchell. She was also nicknamed the "First Lady of the Supper Clubs" by Eleanor Roosevelt. She was once referred to as a "luscious, hazel-eyed Milwaukee blonde who sings the way Garbo looks". Elsie Euphemia Andrews (23 December 1888 – 26 August 1948) was a New Zealand teacher and community leader. She was born in Huirangi, Taranaki, New Zealand, on 23 December 1888. Her parents were John Andrews and his wife, Emily Young, who both came from Taranaki pioneering families. Elsie Andrews was the only one of twelve siblings who attended secondary school; she received her education at Huirangi School and with the help of a scholarship, she went on to New Plymouth High School. When she failed entrance examinations to both university and teachers' college, she became a pupil-teacher at Waitara School. After completing her training, she moved around various rural schools before getting a permanent position at New Plymouth's Fitzroy School.
