High Wall
''High Wall'' is a 1947 American film noir starring Robert Taylor, Audrey Totter and Herbert Marshall. It was directed by Curtis Bernhardt from a screenplay by Sydney Boehm and Lester Cole, based on a play by Alan R. Clark and Bradbury Foote. Plot Steven Kenet catches his unfaithful wife Helen in the apartment of Willard I. Whitcombe, her boss, and she is strangled to death. He attempts to commit suicide by driving his car into the river, even though they have a six-year-old son. Kenet survives but is sent to the county psychiatric hospital for evaluation to determine if he is sane enough to be charged with murder. He has no memory of what happened, likely due to a pre-existing brain injury from the war. Dr. Ann Lorrison takes an interest in his case, and in him. Surgery could cure Kenet's brain injury, but he refuses to consent to it, preferring a life in an insane asylum to a probable murder conviction. Curtis Bernhardt
Curtis Bernhardt (15 April 1899 – 22 February 1981) was a Jewish film director born in Worms, Germany, under the name Kurt Bernhardt. He trained as an actor in Germany, and performed on the stage, before starting as a film director in 1924, with ''Nameless Heroes (film), Nameless Heroes''. Other films include ''A Stolen Life (1946 film), A Stolen Life'' (1946) and ''Sirocco (film), Sirocco'' (1951). Bernhardt made films in Germany from 1925 until 1933, when he was forced to flee the Third Reich — who briefly had him arrested — because he was Jews, Jewish. Bernhardt directed films in France and England before moving on to Cinema of the United States, Hollywood to work for Warner Brothers in 1940. He produced and directed his last Hollywood picture, ''Kisses for My President'' (1964), about the nation's first female Chief Executive starring Polly Bergen and Fred MacMurray. Film noir (; ) is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and motivations. Lisa Golm ( Luise Schmertzler; 10 April 1891 – 6 January 1964) was a German actress who emigrated to America and appeared in a number of Hollywood films as a character actress. Golm made her first screen appearance in the 1939 film ''Confessions of a Nazi Spy''. She also featured on American television, appearing on shows such as ''Alfred Hitchcock Presents'', ''The Third Man'' and ''The Twilight Zone''. Biography On 6 November 1918, she married Ernest Otto Ferdinand Golm in Berlin, Germany and later entered the United States at New York City on 3 December 1937. She was naturalized as an American citizen on 24 September 1943, when a resident of Los Angeles. Death Golm died on 6 January 1964, aged 72, in Tel Aviv, Israel from a neoplasm (or tumour). Charles Arnt
Charles E. Arnt (August 20, 1906 – August 6, 1990) was an American film actor from 1933 to 1962. Arnt appeared as a character actor in more than 200 films. Arnt was born in Michigan City, Indiana, the son of a banker. He graduated from Phillips Academy and Princeton University. While at Princeton, he helped to found the University Players and was president of the Princeton Triangle Club theatrical troupe. He became a banker after he graduated from college. In the early 1930s, Arnt acted with the University Repertory Theater in Maryland. On Broadway, he appeared in ''Carry Nation'' (1932), ''Three Waltzes'' (1937), and ''Knickerbocker Holiday'' (1938). In 1962, Arnt retired from acting and began to import and breed Charolais cattle on a ranch in Washington state. Arnt died in Orcas Island, Washington from pancreatic and liver cancer. Jonathan Hale (born Jonathan Hatley; March 21, 1891 – February 28, 1966) was a Canadian-born film and television actor. Life and career Hale was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Before his acting career, Hale worked in the Diplomatic Corps. Hale is most well known as Dagwood Bumstead's boss, Julius Caesar Dithers, in the '' Blondie'' film series in the 1940s.
