High Sheriff Of Carnarvonshire
This is a list of Sheriffs of Caernarvonshire (or Carnarvonshire). The Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly the Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in a county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial. The Sheriff changes every March. On 1 April 1974, under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, the counties of Caernarvonshire, together with that of Anglesey and Merionethshire were abolished along with their shrievalties, and were replaced by the new county of Gwynedd and the new office of High Sheriff of Gwynedd. Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet
Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet (1553 – 1 March 1627), was a Welsh baronet, Member of Parliament and antiquary. Life He was the son of Morys Wynn ap John, whom he succeeded in 1580, inheriting Gwydir Castle in Carnarvonshire. John was educated at All Souls College, Oxford (1570, awarded BA 1578) and studied law at Furnival's Inn (1572) and the Inner Temple (1576). He claimed to be directly descended from the princes of Gwynedd through Rhodri ab Owain son of Owain Gwynedd. The male line from his family died out in 1779 (see 'Legacy' section below) and the senior male line passed to the Anwyl of Tywyn family. His mother was Jane (Siân) Bulkeley, daughter of Sir Richard Bulkeley and his wife Catherine Griffith, and sister of Sir Richard Bulkeley, head of the Anglesey branch of a powerful landowning family, who originally came from Cheshire. John Griffith (of Plas Mawr)
John Griffith (died 1609) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1571 to 1609. Griffith was the son of William Griffith (died 1587) of Plas Mawr, Caernarfon. He became a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford in 1548 and was awarded B.C.L. in 1551 and his doctorate in 1563. In 1559 he took over the office of Regius professor of civil law at Oxford, which he held till 1566. He was also Principal of New Inn Hall from 1561 to 1564 after which he was admitted to Doctors' Commons. He first entered Parliament in 1571 as the member for Caernarfon, and was re-elected in 1572. He was appointed Sheriff of Caernarvonshire for 1582 and Sheriff of Anglesey for 1587 and 1593. William Maurice (politician)
Sir William Maurice (April 1552 – August 1622) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1593 and 1611. Maurice was the son of Morys ap Ellis ap Morys, and grandson of Ellis ap Morris of Clennenau, his brother was captain Ellis Maurice fought for Queen Elizabeth I in Ireland. He was one of the Council of the Marches of Wales. He was High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire in 1582 and High Sheriff of Merionethshire in 1591. In 1593, he was elected Member of Parliament for Carnarvonshire. He was High Sheriff of Carnarvonshire again in 1596. In 1597 he was re-elected MP for Carnarvonshire. Mostyn Hall
Mostyn Hall is a large house standing in 25 acres (10 hectares) of garden near the village of Mostyn, Flintshire, Wales. It is designated by Cadw as a Grade I listed building. History It is not known for how long a building has been present on the site, but the great hall is thought to have been built by 1470. The house was substantially upgraded in 1631-2 by Roger and Mary Mostyn, descendants of Ieuan Fychan, whose grandson had adopted the Mostyn surname. Since 1660 the hall has been the seat of the Mostyn Baronets, and since 1831, of the barons Mostyn. In the 1840s the 1st Baron Mostyn commissioned architect Ambrose Poynter to remodel the house, which was carried out mainly in 1846–47 in a Jacobethan style inspired by the pre-existing building. William Mostyn (MP)
William Mostyn (June 5, 1836– March 30, 1881) was an Irish-born doctor and political figure in Ontario. He represented Lanark North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1875 to 1879 as a Conservative member. He drowned at the age of 44. Of Welsh descent, he was born in Elphin, County Roscommon and came to Upper Canada with his parents in 1837. Mostyn was educated in Kingston and received his M.D. from Queen's University in 1858. He served as a surgeon for the militia. Mostyn was president of the North Lanark Agricultural Society. He served three years as reeve of Almonte and 15 years as assistant coroner for Lanark Ontario.
