High Hill, Texas
High Hill is an unincorporated community in southwestern Fayette County, Texas, United States. It is located on Farm Road 2672, three miles northwest of Schulenburg, Texas. History The area was originally part of the E. Anderson league and was settled in the 1830s. Around the late 1840s German immigrants established several small settlements, Blum Hill, Wursten and Oldenburg. The Old High Hill Cemetery is located in what was the community of Blum Hill. The original part of High Hill was named Blum Hill after Robert Blum (1804–1848), the German political activist who organized the Vaterlandsverein, advocated mass education, freedom of the press, and the right of free assembly. He was arrested and executed in Vienna. Blum was a tragic victim of Germany's Revolutions of 1848. Oldenburg, a second village, named for the German province of Oldenburg, was established about one and one-half miles north of Blum Hill approximately 1860. Fayette County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,435. Its county seat is La Grange. The county was created in 1837 and organized the next year. History Fayette County was established in 1837 from land given by Bastrop and Colorado Counties. Schulenburg is a city in Fayette County, Texas, Fayette County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,633 at the 2020 census. Known for its German Texan, German culture, Schulenburg is home of the Texas Polka Music Museum. It is in a rural, agricultural area settled by German and Czech emigrants in the 1800s. History In 1831, the First Mexican Republic, Mexican government granted of land to Kesiah Crier. Crier's family and the James Lyons family were the first European-American settlers in the area. The town of Schulenburg developed from two nearby communities: Lyons, founded in 1842, and High Hill, settled in 1842 and later named in 1858. Robert Blum
Robert Blum (10 November 1807 – 9 November 1848) was a German democratic politician, publicist, poet, publisher, revolutionist and member of the National Assembly of 1848. In his fight for a strong, unified Germany he opposed ethnocentrism and it was his strong belief that no one people should rule over another. As such he was an opponent of the Prussian occupation of Poland and was in contact with the revolutionists there. Blum was a critic of antisemitism, supported the German Catholic sect, and agitated for the equality of the sexes. Although claiming immunity as a member of the National Assembly, he was arrested during a stay at the hotel "Stadt London" in Vienna and executed for his role in the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states. Nativity of Mary, Blessed Virgin Catholic Church is a historic church located at 2833 Farm to Market Road 2672 in High Hill, Texas. The church, which was built in 1906, was designed by prominent Texas church architect Leo M.J. Dielmann. Dielmann designed the red brick church in the Gothic Revival style. The interior of the church was painted by Ferdinand Stockert and Hermann Kern in 1912. The pair painted designs on canvas and affixed them to the church walls, resulting in decorations which resemble wallpaper. The designs were drawn freehand and include symbols such as angels, crosses with crowns, Stars of David, and bunches of grapes. The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway (B.B.B.C. or B.B.B. & C.), also called the Harrisburg Road or Harrisburg Railroad, was the first operating railroad in Texas. It completed its first segment of track between Harrisburg, Texas (now a neighborhood of Houston) and Stafford's Point, Texas in 1853.
