Higbee's was a department store founded in 1860 in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1987, Higbee's was sold to the joint partnership of Dillard's department stores and Youngstown-based developer, Edward J. DeBartolo. The stores continued to operate under the Higbee name until 1992, when DeBartolo sold his shares to his partners and the chain was re-branded as Dillard's. History Higbee's was founded by Edwin Converse Higbee and John G. Hower on September 10, 1860, as Higbee & Hower Dry Goods. The first day of business saw $100 in sales. It was reorganized as The Higbee Co. in 1902 after the death of Mr. Hower and relocated from its original Public Square location to a new five-story Playhouse Square Center store, directly across from its sworn arch-rival Halle Brothers Co. Edward Young Higbee
Edward Young Higbee (1810 – December 10, 1871) was an Episcopal clergyman. Born in New Jersey in 1812, Higbee was ordained a deacon in 1829, and became rector of Trinity Church in Washington, D.C., in 1834. From 1835 to 1836 he served as Chaplain of the United States Senate before becoming assistant rector of Trinity Church, New York, where he served for the remainder of his career. He married twice, and had four children by his second wife. He died unexpectedly in 1871.⋅ Early years Higbee was born in 1810 in Mount Holly Township, New Jersey, the son of Rev. Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee (May 18, 1874 – January 10, 1941) was a pioneering Canadian-born United States Navy military nurse, who served as Commanding officer, Superintendent of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War I. She is best known for being the first female recipient of the Navy Cross. Early life and education Higbee was born Lenah H. Sutcliffe in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada, on 18 May 1874. She completed nurses' training at the New York University School of Medicine, New York Post-Graduate Hospital in 1899 and entered private practice soon thereafter. Lenah Higbee took postgraduate training at Fordham Hospital, New York in 1908. In 1899, she married retired United States Marine Corps, Marine Corps Lieutenant colonel (United States), Lieutenant Colonel John H. Higbee. His first wife Isabel Higbee had died in 1898. Mahlon Jesse Higbee (August 16, 1901 – April 7, 1968) was an American professional baseball player. He played three games in Major League Baseball (MLB) as an outfielder for the 1922 New York Giants during the final week of the season. Biography Higbee was born in 1901 in Louisville, Kentucky. His professional baseball career spanned 1922 to 1927, primarily in Minor League Baseball, where he played over 300 games (records of the era are incomplete). He began the 1922 season with the Hopkinsville Hoppers of the KITTY League, and dominated the Class D circuit, leading the league with a .385 batting average, 161 hits and 101 runs scored.
