Abel Heywood
Abel Heywood (25 February 1810 – 19 August 1893) was an English publisher, radical and mayor of Manchester. Early life Heywood was born into a poor family in Prestwich, who moved to Manchester after Heywood's father died in 1812. Abel obtained a basic education at the Anglican Bennett Street School, and at the age of nine started work in a warehouse for 1''s'' and 6''d'' a week. He supplemented his energetic autodidactism by attending the Mechanics' Institute, and following a summary dismissal by his manufacturing employer set up a penny reading room in Manchester at some point in 1831. He gained the Manchester agency for ''The Poor Man's Guardian'', and made a point of refusing to pay the stamp duty intended to suppress mass publishing, being imprisoned in 1832 for four months for refusing to pay a £48 fine. George Heywood
George Heywood (12 January 1907 – 7 September 1985) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Port Vale and Southport. Early and personal life George Heywood was born on 12 January 1907 in Clayton, Manchester. His father, Fred, played professional football for Newcastle United and Blackpool. He died of a heart attack on 7 September 1985, whilst on holiday in Guernsey. John Heywood
John Heywood (c. 1497 – c. 1580) was an English writer known for his plays, poems, and collection of proverbs. Although he is best known as a playwright, he was also active as a musician and composer, though no musical works survive. A devout Catholic, he nevertheless served as a royal servant to both the Catholic and Protestant regimes of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. Life Heywood was born in 1497, probably in Coventry, and moved to London some time in his late teens. He spent time studying at Broadgates Hall (now Pembroke College), Oxford, but did not obtain a degree. His language skills can be seen by his adaptation of his play Johan Johan from the French ''La Farce du paste''. Jeremy John Heywood, Baron Heywood of Whitehall, (31 December 1961 – 4 November 2018) was a British civil servant who served as Cabinet Secretary to David Cameron and Theresa May from 2012 to 2018 and Head of the Home Civil Service from 2014 to 2018. He served as the Principal Private Secretary to Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown from 1999 to 2003 and 2008 to 2010. He also served as Downing Street Chief of Staff and the first Downing Street Permanent Secretary. Jean Heywood (born Jean Murray; 15 July 1921 – 14 September 2019) was a British actress. Born in Blyth, Northumberland, in July 1921, Heywood appeared in films such as ''Billy Elliot'' and ''Our Day Out''. Her TV work included roles in ''When the Boat Comes In'', '' All Creatures Great and Small'', ''Boys from the Blackstuff'', ''Family Affairs'', ''The Bill'' and ''Casualty''. Jasper Heywood (1535 – 9 January 1598) was an English Jesuit priest. He is known as the English translator of three Latin plays of Seneca, the ''Troas'' (1559), the ''Thyestes'' (1560) and '' Hercules Furens'' (1561). Life He was son of John Heywood, and became a fellow of Merton College, Oxford, but was compelled to resign in 1558. In the same year he was elected a fellow of All Souls College, but, refusing to conform to the changes in religion at the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I, he gave up his fellowship and went to Rome, where he was received into the Society of Jesus. For seventeen years he was professor of moral theology and controversy in the Jesuit College at Dillingen, in present-day Bavaria. James Heywood (28 May 1810 – 17 October 1897) was a British MP, philanthropist and social reformer. Early life James Heywood was born on 28 May 1810 in Manchester, Lancashire. He was the son of banker Nathaniel and Ann (née Percival) Heywood, and was the brother of Benjamin Heywood and Thomas Heywood and grandson of Thomas Percival. He matriculated from Trinity College, Cambridge and was admitted to the Inner Temple. Career Heywood was a member of the Portico Library and the Manchester Statistical Society, of which he was president between 1853–55, and published a study of the population of Miles Platting in Manchester.
