"Hey You" is a song written by Randy Bachman, and was first recorded by Canadian rock group Bachman–Turner Overdrive (BTO) for their 1975 album ''Four Wheel Drive''. It was the first and more successful of two singles issued from the LP, the second being "Quick Change Artist", which was released in Canada only. Background The lead vocal is provided by Randy Bachman. There were rumors circulated that Randy Bachman directed the lyrics of "Hey You" at former bandmate Burton Cummings, who had publicly stated that Bachman would never make it in the music business again following his departure from The Guess Who. Randy confirmed the rumors in interviews years later, stating: "I deserved to gloat a bit after all the mud Burton had slung at me." Bachman–Turner Overdrive
Bachman–Turner Overdrive, often abbreviated BTO, were a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, founded by Randy Bachman, Robbie Bachman and Fred Turner in 1973. Their 1970s catalogue included five top-40 albums and six US top-40 singles (11 in Canada). BTO has five certified gold albums and one certified platinum album in the US; in Canada, they have six certified platinum albums and one certified gold album. The band has sold nearly 30 million albums worldwide, and has fans affectionately known as "gearheads" (derived from the band's gear-shaped logo). Many of their songs, including " Let It Ride", " You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", " Takin' Care of Business", " Hey You", and " Roll on Down the Highway", still receive regular play on classic-rock stations. The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States. The weekly tracking period for sales was initially Monday to Sunday when Nielsen started tracking sales in 1991, but was changed to Friday to Thursday in July 2015. This tracking period also applies to compiling online streaming data. ''RPM'' ( and later ) was a Canadian music-industry publication that featured song and album charts for Canada. The publication was founded by Walt Grealis in February 1964, supported through its existence by record label owner Stan Klees. ''RPM'' ceased publication in November 2000. ''RPM'' stood for "Records, Promotion, Music". The magazine's title varied over the years, including ''RPM Weekly'' and ''RPM Magazine''. Canadian music charts ''RPM'' maintained several format charts, including Top Singles (all genres), Adult Contemporary, Dance, Urban, Rock/Alternative and Country Tracks (or Top Country Tracks) for country music. "Let It Ride" is a 1974 single by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, written by Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, with the latter providing lead vocals. It was first recorded for the 1973 album ''Bachman–Turner Overdrive II''. The single peaked at No. 23 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100 on April 27, 1974 (making it BTO's first Top 40 song in the US), and spent two weeks at No. 14 on the ''Cash Box'' Top 100. In Canada, the song reached No. 3. Background The tune was inspired by a traffic incident. While on tour in 1973 supporting The Doobie Brothers, the band was on a highway in their tour bus and got boxed in by a couple of trucks. It peaked at No. 1 in Canada on the ''RPM'' national albums chart on October 4 and again on October 18, 1975 while hitting No. 5 on the U.S. Pop Albums chart. The most popular single from the album, " Hey You," was written by Randy Bachman. It reached No. 1 in Canada, holding the top position on the ''RPM'' national singles chart for two weeks in June, 1975, and No. 21 on the U.S. charts.
