Opomyzoidea Genera
The Opomyzoidea are a superfamily of flies. Biology Opomyzoids show a range of lifestyles including mining plant leaves (many Agromyzidae), feeding in grass stems ( Anthomyzidae and Opomyzidae), forming plant galls (''Fergusonina''), feeding on fungi (some Anthomyzidae and Asteiidae), feeding on sap flows of trees (some Aulacigastridae, Odiniidae and Periscelididae), living in galleries of wood-boring insects (Odiniidae) or in water-filled cavities of plants (phytotelmata; Aulacigastridae, Neurochaetidae and Periscelididae). However, the biology of most opomyzoid families is poorly known. Phylogeny The phylogeny of Opomyzoidea is controversial, with different authors assigning different families and different relationships among families. One study using molecular analysis concluded that the superfamily is not monophyletic In cladistics for a group of organisms, monophyly is the condition of being a clade—that is, a group of taxa composed only of a common ancesto ...

Hexomyza Simplicoides
''Hexomyza simplicoides'' is a species of fly in the family Agromyzidae and forms woody galls on many species of willow. Description The woody gall is a spindle-shaped swelling tapering into the stem. It is about 2 cm long and at its widest 0.5 cm, but can be indistinct, with the stem barely swollen. Several galls may form around the stem. During the summer there is one white larva in a spherical chamber, which pupates and overwinters in the gall. The puparium is yellowish, with bright reddish brown front segments. Goat willow ( ''S. caprea'') is considered to be the main host but has been recorded from many species of sallow including ''S. alba'', ''S. triandra'' and ''S. viminalis'' and on the hybrids between them. Also recorded on ''S. aurita'', ''S. cinerea'', ''S. cinerea'' subsp. ''oleifolia'', ''S. pedicellata'' and ''S. repens'' Distribution Recorded from Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Ne ...

Charles Frédéric Girard
Charles Frédéric Girard (8 March 1822 – 29 January 1895) was a French biologist specializing in ichthyology and herpetology. Born in Mulhouse, France, he studied at the College of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, as a student of Louis Agassiz. In 1847, he accompanied Agassiz as his assistant to Harvard University. Three years later, Spencer Fullerton Baird called him to the Smithsonian Institution to work on its growing collection of North American reptiles, amphibians and fishes. He worked at the museum for the next ten years and published numerous papers, many in collaboration with Baird. In 1854, he was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. Besides his work at the Smithsonian, he managed to earn an M.D. from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1856. In 1859 he returned to France and was awarded the Cuvier Prize by the Institute of France for his work on the North American reptiles and fishes two years later. When the American Civil War broke out, he joined the Confederate ...
