Hetaireia
The ( grc-gre, Ἑταιρεία, Latinized as ''hetaeria'') was a term for a corps of bodyguards during the Byzantine Empire. Etymology and usage of the term means 'the Company', echoing the ancient Macedonian Companions and the Classical Greek aristocrats who attended . The most important such corps was the 'Imperial ' (, ), composed chiefly of foreigners, which formed part of the Byzantine professional standing army alongside the in the 9th–12th centuries. The term was also applied to the smaller bodyguards of thematic military commanders (), headed by a count (, ), and from the 13th century on, it was employed in a generic sense for the armed retinues of magnates, bound by oath to their master. The Companions ( el, , ''hetairoi'') were the elite cavalry of the Macedonian army from the time of king Philip II of Macedon, achieving their greatest prestige under Alexander the Great, and regarded as the first or among the first shock cavalry used in Europe. Chosen Companions, or Hetairoi, formed the elite guard of the king (Somatophylakes). Etymology The name of the military unit derives from Greek ''Hetairoi'', those near the king. The Hetairoi (Companions) could be members of the Macedonian aristocracy or commoners of any origin who enjoyed the trust and friendship of the Macedonian regent. ''Hetaeridia'' or ''Hetairidia'' () was a name of a festival among Macedonians and Magnesians (Athenaeus XIII. 572, quoting Hegesander). The origin of the Thessalian ''Hetaeridia'' is said to be related to Jason, who sacrificed to Zeus ''Hetaereius'', "Zeus of the Companions" (the Argonauts) and called the festival by this name. Ancient Greek clubs ( el, , ''hetaireiai'') were associations of ancient Greeks who were united by a common interest or goal. Types The earliest reference of clubs in ancient Greece appears in the law of Solon, which is quoted in the ''Digest'' of Justinian I (47.22). This law guaranteed the administrative independence of such associations if they kept within the bounds of the law. The ''Digest'' mentions these associations for religious practices, burial, trade, privateering, and communal meals. It also mentions demes, citizen groups based on subdivisions of land, and phratries, kinship groups. Other than this law, information about the clubs have been found primarily on inscriptions, including those related to burial practices and common meals.
