World War II
World War II or the Second World War, often abbreviated as WWII or WW2, was a world war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. Dunkirk Evacuation
The Dunkirk evacuation, codenamed Operation Dynamo and also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, or just Dunkirk, was the evacuation of more than 338,000 Allied soldiers during the Second World War from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in the north of France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940. The operation commenced after large numbers of Belgian, British, and French troops were cut off and surrounded by German troops during the six-week Battle of France. In a speech to the House of Commons, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called this "a colossal military disaster", saying "the whole root and core and brain of the British Army" had been stranded at Dunkirk and seemed about to perish or be captured. Counter-admiral Gabriel Paul Auphan (November 4, 1894, Alès – April 16, 1982) was a French naval officer who became the State Secretary of the Navy (secrétaire d'État à la Marine) of the Vichy government from April to November 1942. Naval officer Entered the École navale in October 1911, enseigne de vaisseau in October 1914, he served on board ''Jeanne-d'Arc'' in the northern squadron, then in April 1915, in the Mediterranean where he participated to operations in the Dardanelles. Len Ortzen
Len Ortzen was an English writer and translator from French. Life Ortzen grew up in the East End of London, and his first novel, ''Down Donkey Row'' (1938), was appreciatively reviewed by Hugh Massingham as "a picture, at once faithful and amusing, of the East End". However, his second novel was not so well-received, and thereafter Ortzen stuck to translation and writing non-fiction.
