Johannes Hertel
Johannes Hertel (13 March 1872, Zwickau – 27 October 1955, Leipzig) was a German Indologist. Hertel wrote numerous essays and books on Indological topics. His research focus was Indian narrative literature and the Vedas. Above all, he is known for his scientific work on the textual history of the ''Panchatantra''. Hertel obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig in 1897 with a thesis on the ''Hitopadesha''. From 1919 to 1937 he was full professor and Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Leipzig, where he taught Asian and Indo-European languages such as Sanskrit, Vedic, and Avestan, and he translated numerous works from these into German. Most of his works on Vedic and Avestan subjects appeared in the series ''Indo-Iranische Quellen und Forschungen'' ("Indo-Iranian Sources and Research"), which he also edited. Peter Ludwig Hertel
Peter Ludwig Hertel (21 April 1817 – 13 June 1899) was a German composer of dance music and Ballet (music), ballet music. He is best known as the composer of the ballet ''La fille mal gardée''. He also composed the music for the Faust ballet ''Satanella oder Metamorphosen'', and "Die Abenteuer von Flick und Flock" (The Adventure of Flick and Flock), both choreographed by Paul Taglioni. Hertel was born in Berlin. He studied violin and composition under the renowned musicians of his era, Eduard Rietz, Friedrich Schneider, Adolf Marx. Hannes Hertel is a German botanist and taxonomist and was Director of the State Herbarium in Munich, Germany 1992 - 2004. His specialist areas are the fungi and lichens. Early life and education Hannes Hertel was born in 1939. His doctorate was awarded in 1967 for work on members of the lichen genus ''Lecidea'' that thrive on lime rich rocks and sites. This was undertaken under the guidance of Josef Poelt. Johann Wilhelm Hertel (9 October 1727 – 14 June 1789) was a German composer, harpsichord and violin player. He was born in Eisenach, into a family of musicians. His father, Johann Christian Hertel (1697–1754) was ''Konzertmeister'' (from 1733) and director of music at the Eisenach court, while his grandfather, Jakob Christian Hertel (c. 1667-c. 1726), had been ''Kapellmeister'' in Oettingen and later Merseburg. At an early age Johann Wilhelm accompanied his father, an accomplished viola da gamba player, on tour at the harpsichord. He also learned the violin, which he studied with Franz Benda.
