Hermínio Martinho
Hermínio Paiva Fernandes Martinho ComMA (born 23 March 1946) is a Portuguese agricultural engineer and politician, who was the first president of the Democratic Renewal Party (PRD). Early life Hermínio Martinho was born on 23 March 1946 in Tancos, Vila Nova da Barquinha, in the district of Santarém. He studied and did his military service in Santarém. Political career Between 1979 and 1982, Martinho was an alderman in the Municipality of Santarém for the Socialist Party. In July 1985, Martinho was elected the first President of newly formed Democratic Renewal Party (PRD), a party that had the political support and mentoring of António Ramalho Eanes, then President of Portugal. In the 1985 Portuguese legislative election, under Martinho's leadership, the PRD achieved more than a million votes and won 45 seats in the Assembly of the Republic, making PRD the third political force in Portugal. The Democratic Renewal Party ( pt, Partido Renovador Democrático, , PRD; also ''Democratic Renovator Party'') was a political party in Portugal, founded in 1985 with the political support of the then independent President of the Republic, Ramalho Eanes, and lasting until 2000. 1989 Portuguese Local Elections
The Portuguese local elections of 1989 took place on 17 December. The elections consisted of three separate elections in the 305 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the Municipal Chambers, whose winner is elected mayor, another election for the Municipal Assembly and a last one for the lower-level Parish Assembly, whose winner is elected parish president. This last was held separately in the more than 4,200 parishes around the country. For the first time since democracy was restored, the center-left/left-wing parties won a nationwide local election. The Socialist Party won, also for the 1st time, the status of largest local party, a title the Socialists would hold on until 2001, and gained control in many big cities across the country, like Lisbon and Porto.
