Meppen (; Northern Low Saxon: ''Möppen'') is a town in and the seat of the Emsland district of Lower Saxony, Germany, at the confluence of the Ems, Hase, and Nordradde rivers and the Dortmund–Ems Canal (DEK). The name stems from the word ''Mappe'', meaning " delta". Geography The town lying on the mouth of the Hase into the Ems in the central part of the Emsland between the cities of Lingen and Papenburg. ''Schtonk!'' (subtitled ''Der Film zum Buch vom Führer''; "The film accompanying the ''Führer's'' book") is a 1992 German satirical film which retells the story of the 1983 ''Hitler Diaries'' hoax. It was written and directed by Helmut Dietl. Background In 1983, the German magazine '' Stern'' began to publish the purported Hitler diaries with great fanfare. They were soon proven to be fake using basic analysis techniques. Co-writer and director Helmut Dietl researched the scandal for two years and was quoted as having to leave out several real events from the film because they were too outrageous. The title is a bow to Charlie Chaplin's classic ''The Great Dictator'', in which the Tomainian dictator Adenoid Hynkel repeatedly uses "Schtonk!" as an expression of disgustthe word has no meaning in German. Friedrich Fromm
Friedrich Wilhelm Waldemar Fromm (8 October 1888 – 12 March 1945) was a German Army officer. In World War II, Fromm was Commander in Chief of the Replacement Army (''Ersatzheer''), in charge of training and personnel replacement for combat divisions of the German Army, a position he occupied for most of the war. A recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, he was executed for failing to act against the plot of 20 July 1944 to assassinate Hitler. Early life Fromm was born in Charlottenburg. Uwe Barschel
Uwe Barschel (13 May 1944 – 11 October 1987) was a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) who served as Minister-President in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Having assumed office of Minister-President at the age of 38, Barschel is as of to date the youngest head of government of a federal state in Germany, just as the youngest former Minister-President to die. He died nine days after his resignation at age of 43. He was found dead under mysterious circumstances on 11 October 1987 when his clothed body was discovered in a full bathtub at the Hotel Beau-Rivage in Geneva, Switzerland, shortly after he became embroiled in scandal during the 1987 state election.
