Hermann Board
Hermann Board (13 October 1867 – 21 February 1918) was a German architect and art historian. Life Born in Essen, Board was the son of the master mason Hermann Board (d. 1869) and attended the municipal Realschule in Essen. He then completed a four-year apprenticeship as an architect and attended the municipal further education school in Essen, the commercial technical school in Cologne and the Technical University of Berlin. Afterwards, he worked for seven years in the construction office of the mining company and also taught in the construction classes of the municipal technical and further education schools in Essen. This was followed by four years as a self-employed architect in Essen before he completed his studies in art history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn with Paul Clemen, at the University of Strasbourg with Georg Dehio and at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg with Henry Thode. Henry Thode
Henry Thode (13 January 1857 – 19 November 1920) was a German art historian. He was born in Dresden and died in Copenhagen. Biography He was an art historian at the time of the Weimar republic. He wrote against the prevailing ideas of the time that art from outside of Germany, such as French Impressionism was superior to traditional academic or native art. Thode believed that great German art should illustrate technical skill, realism and the German spirit. He also felt that art should be understood by all, not just academics and the bourgeois. Thode wrote a great deal about how the modern art of the Impressionists attempted to both destroy 'true' German art and the 'true' German spirit. His philosophies were very important in the formulation of the cultural policies of the Third Reich, especially in terms of 'degenerate' art. The Kunstakademie Düsseldorf is the academy of fine arts of the state of North Rhine Westphalia at the city of Düsseldorf, Germany. Friedrich Schaarschmidt
Friedrich Schaarschmidt (4 February 1863 – 12 June 1902) was a German landscape painter and figure painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting, conservator and art writer. Life Born in Bonn, Schaarschmidt was born in Bonn as the son of Professor Carl Schaarschmidt (1822-1908), a philosophy historian and head of the Bonn University Library. From 1880 until 1889, he studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There, Hugo Crola, Johann Peter Theodor Janssen and Wilhelm Sohn, temporarily also Eduard von Gebhardt and Carl Ernst Forberg, were his teachers. As a practising artist, Schaarschmidt turned to En plein air. He often decorated his landscape paintings with figures in antique robes. Georg Dehio
Georg Gottfried Julius Dehio (22 November 1850 in Reval (now Tallinn), Governorate of Estonia, Russian Empire – 21 March 1932 in Tübingen), was a Baltic German art historian. In 1900, Dehio started the "''Handbuch der deutschen Kunstgeschichte''" (Handbook of German Art History), published by Ernst Wasmuth. The project is ongoing and managed by the 'Dehio-Vereinigung', Munich. He is the namesake of the Georg Dehio Prize (Georg Dehio Book Prize).
