Herman Skolnik Award
The Herman Skolnik Award is awarded annually by the Division of Chemical Information of the American Chemical Society, "to recognize outstanding contributions to and achievements in the theory and practice of chemical information science". the award is of 3,000 US dollars. It is named for Herman Skolnik (1914-1994), who was a co-founder of the then ACS Division of Chemical Literature in 1948 and a key figure in the Division. The first award was made to him. The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a scientific society based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Alexandru Balaban
Alexandru T. Balaban (born April 2, 1931 in Timișoara) is a Romanian chemist who made significant contributions to the fields of organic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, mathematical chemistry, and chemical graph theory. Early life and education Balaban was born in Timișoara, in the western part of Romania. His parents (Teodor and Florica Balaban) paid a lot of attention to Balaban's education, strongly encouraging his fascination with chemistry. In 1935 his family moved to Bucharest, where Balaban attended elementary school. After World War II, in 1945 they moved to Petroșani, where he finished high school. Alexandru Balaban enrolled the Politehnica University of Bucharest in 1949, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in chemistry on April 2, 1959. The topic of his Ph.D. thesis dealt with the restrictions catalyzed by anhydrous aluminium chloride. Frank Allen (chemist)
Frank Harmsworth Allen FRSC CChem (1944–2014) was an internationally recognised crystallographer. Biography Frank Harmsworth Allen was born in 1944 in Reading, Berkshire and raised in Pangbourne, a village 6 miles away and close to the River Thames. He was the only child of George W Allen and Gwendolen Retta (née Whittamore). He gained a First in chemistry and a PhD in crystallography at Imperial College London, and in 1968 moved to Vancouver to take up a post-doctoral fellowship, working with James Trotter at the University of British Columbia. Before long, they had established the structure and conformation of thalidomide. Peter Norton (born November 14, 1943) is an American programmer, software publisher, author, and philanthropist. He is best known for the computer programs and books that bear his name and portrait. Norton sold his software business to Symantec Corporation (now Gen Digital) in 1990. Norton was born in Aberdeen, Washington, and raised in Seattle. He attended Reed College and later worked on mainframes and minicomputers for companies like Boeing and Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Norton founded Peter Norton Computing in 1982, pioneering IBM PC compatible utilities software. His first computer book, "Inside the IBM PC: Access to Advanced Features & Programming," was published in 1983. By 1988, Norton Computing had grown to $15 million in revenue with 38 employees. Johann Gasteiger (* 27 October 1941 in Dachau) is a German Chemist and a Chemoinformatician on which he wrote and edited various books. Life Johann Gasteiger studied Chemistry at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, ETH Zurich and University of Zurich. He obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1971 with Professor Rolf Huisgen.
