Herman McInnes
Herman Lewis McInnes (also Hermon McInnes or Herman McInnis) (October 13, 1862 – July 16, 1923) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Herman McInnes was born in Saint John, New Brunswick and educated in Fredericton. He worked as a druggist for five years in that city and in Winnipeg after graduating high school. He studied medicine at the Manitoba Medical College — now part of the University of Manitoba - from which he graduated in 1886. He served as an assistant surgeon during the North-West Rebellion. He came to Edmonton in 1886 and took up the practice of medicine before going to Europe for further study from 1889 until 1892. He resumed his practice upon his return and also founded McInnes Lumber Company in 1902. He was elected to Edmonton City Council for a one-year term as an alderman in the 1907 municipal election, in which he finished fifth out of twelve candidates. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First-past-the-post voting, First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per Ward (country subdivision), ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. 1910 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1910 municipal election was held December 12, 1910 for the purpose of electing a mayor and five aldermen to sit on the Edmonton City Council, as well as three public school trustees and five separate school trustees. There were also four proposed bylaws put to a vote of the electorate concurrently with the election. Positions to be elected There were eight aldermen on city council, but three of the positions were already filled: James Hyndman, John H. Millar, and James Mould had been elected to two-year terms in 1909 and were still in office. George S. Armstrong had also been elected to a two-year term, but had resigned to run for mayor. February 1912 Edmonton Municipal Election
On September 27, 1911, the voters of Edmonton approved by plebiscite the amalgamation of Edmonton with Strathcona. A majority of Strathcona voters also voted in favour of amalgamation. Amalgamation was effected February 1, 1912. In anticipation of this, no election was held December 11, 1911 as would normally have been required (municipal elections in Edmonton at the time being held the second Monday of every December). Instead, elections were fixed for February 16, 1912. Positions to be elected With the amalgamation, Council's size was increased by two members, bringing the total number of aldermen to ten.
