Herman L. Løvenskiold
Herman Leopoldus Løvenskiold (4 February 1897 at Rafnes – 16 July 1982 at Nesodden), often known as ''Herman L. Løvenskiold'', was a Norwegian ornithologist, photographer, government scholar and author on heraldry. He obtained a doctorate in chemistry in Germany, but his main interest was the life of birds; hence he was known as ''Fugle-Herman'' within the family. In 1964, he obtained a Norwegian doctorate in ornithology with the dissertation ''Avifauna Svalbardensis''. He wrote books on ornithology and environmental protection, and was the photographer in Carl Schøyen's book ''Fuglefjell'' (1931). Løvenskiold was also interested in genealogy and heraldry. He authored the book ''Heraldisk nøkkel'' and was the first chairman of the Norwegian Heraldic Society. He also wrote a book about his own family, the Løvenskiold family. Ornithology is a branch of zoology that concerns the "methodological study and consequent knowledge of birds with all that relates to them." Several aspects of ornithology differ from related disciplines, due partly to the high visibility and the aesthetic appeal of birds. Government scholar (Norwegian, ''statsstipendiat'') is a position awarded by the Parliament of Norway upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education and Research and funded directly over the State budget of Norway. The position can be "for life" (until the normal age of retirement, 67 years) or for a limited period of time, although modern appointments usually are "for life." The scholarships are awarded to a select number of persons whose work is deemed important for the society, and who may engage in research, culture or other societal areas. As of 2011, there were 30 government scholars in Norway; 23 men and 7 women. All appointees were included in the '' Norwegian State Calendar'' until it ceased publication in 2012. Heraldry is a discipline relating to the design, display and study of armorial bearings (known as armory), as well as related disciplines, such as vexillology, together with the study of ceremony, rank and pedigree. Armory, the best-known branch of heraldry, concerns the design and transmission of the heraldic achievement. Carl Schøyen
Carl Schøyen (6 July 1877 – 5 March 1951) was a Norwegian poet and non-fiction writer. He was born in Kristiansand, and his family later moved to Kristiania. A summer with his uncle at Skomvær Lighthouse at Røst was influential for his later literary career. He made his literary debut in 1895 with the poetry collection ''Melodier''. Among his other books are ''Tre stammers møte'' from 1918, and ''I Sameland'' from 1924. He argued for the preservation of nature, including protection of the common eider and eagles, and of the forests of Pasvikdalen Pasvikdalen (russian: Долина реки Паз) is a valley in Norway and Russia. is the largest Norwegian biographical encyclopedia. The first edition (NBL1) was issued between 1921 and 1983, including 19 volumes and 5,100 articles. It was published by Aschehoug with economic support from the state. bought the rights to NBL1 from Aschehoug in 1995, and after a pre-project in 1996–97 the work for a new edition began in 1998.
