Herman Charles Bosman Award
The Media24 Books Literary Awards (known before 2011 as the Via Afrika Awards, and before that as the Nasboek Literary Awards) are a group of five South African literary prizes awarded annually by Media24, the print-media arm of the South African media company Naspers. They are open to authors whose books are published within the Media24 Books stable (previously known as the Via Afrika stable), which includes NB Publishers, Jonathan Ball Publishers, LuxVerbi-BM, NVA, and Van Schaik Publishers. Each award is worth R35 000. The awards comprise: * The W.A. Hofmeyr Prize, a long-established prize for Afrikaans literature; * The Herman Charles Bosman Prize for English literature; * The Recht Malan Prize for non-fiction; * The MER Prizes for illustrated children’s books and youth literature; * The Elisabeth Eybers Prize for poetry. Media24 is the print media division of the South African media company Naspers. It controls Naspers' newspaper and magazine Southern African publishing and printing activities, including Internet publishing of the 24.com collection of web portals. Alexander Strachan (writer)
Alexander Strachan (died 1607) was church of Scotland minister. He was exiled following the General Assembly of Aberdeen for not retreating from his presbyterian principles. Life Alexander Strachan was on the Exercise at St Andrews 28 June 1593. He was admitted to Second Charge, Cupar, before 1599. He was translated, and admitted to Creich about 1605. Strachan was one of those who constituted the General Assembly of Aberdeen on 2 July 1605, against the King's wishes, for which he was denounced on 18 July, and imprisoned at Blackness Castle on 3 August. He was tried before the Lords of Justiciary on 10 January 1606. As a result he was banished for life. Marlene van Niekerk (born 10 November 1954) is a South African poet, writer, and academic. She is best known for her novels, the satirical tragicomedy ''Triomf'' (1994) and the Herzog-winning ''Agaat'' (2004), which explore themes including the family, the change in power dynamics occasioned by the end of Apartheid, and inequalities of race, gender, and class. He is renowned for being one of the foremost gay writers in Afrikaans, his most controversial book being ''Nagsweet'' ("Night sweat"). Petra Muller (writer)
Petra Schersing (née Müller, born 18 October 1965 in Quedlinburg) is a retired East German sprinter who specialised in the 400 metres. She represented sports club SC Chemie Halle and was coached by Harold Werner. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, she won a silver medal in the 400 metres and a bronze medal in the 4×400 metres relay. Biography As Petra Muller, she first achieved international recognition, when she became the 1983 European Junior Champion at 400 metres. She also won a gold medal in the 4 × 400 m relay. Lettie Viljoen was a pseudonym of the South African author Ingrid Winterbach, who primarily writes in Afrikaans. She lives in Jamestown, Stellenbosch. Life and education Winterbach was born in Johannesburg in 1948. She got her early education from Florida High School, Johannesburg and studied Afrikaans, Dutch and Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, and went on to a postgraduate degree in Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of Stellenbosch under D.J.
