Heriberto Gíl Martínez Airport
The Heriberto Gil Martínez Airport is an airport serving the municipality of Tulua in the Valle del Cauca Department of Colombia. The airport was formerly Farfan Airport, named after an unverified pre-Hispanic tribe. On 20 August 2004, it was renamed after Heriberto Gil Martínez, one of the first aviators in Colombia, who along with Camilo Daza founded the FAC. It has no commercial air services. Currently the airstrip is used by the Marco Fidel Suárez Military Aviation School (EMAVI) de Santiago de Cali. Although the airport is central in one of the great intermountain valleys of Colombia, its short runway has hindered interest in establishing scheduled air service. The Tulua VOR-DME (Ident: ULQ) is located on the field. Marco Fidel Suárez Air Base ( es, Base Aérea Marco Fidel Suárez) is a Colombian military base assigned to the Colombian Air Force (''Fuerza Aérea Colombiana'' or FAC) Military Aviation School (''Escuela Militar de Aviación'' or EMAVI). The base is located in Cali (also known as Santiago de Cali), a city in the Valle del Cauca department of Colombia. It is named for Marco Fidel Suárez, a former president of Colombia. Tuluá
Tuluá (), is a city located in the heart of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. A major industrial and commercial center, it is the region's fourth-largest city after Cali—the department capital— Buenaventura and Palmira. Founded around 1741 by Juan de Lemos y Aguirre, it has a population of approximately 220,000. Heriberto Gil Martinez (24 November 1903 – May 21, 1933) was a Colombian soldier. Biography Martinez was born to Ramon Nonato Gil and Isabel Martínez de Gil. Camilo Daza Álvarez (June 25, 1898 – March 18, 1975) was a Colombian aviator. He was born in Pamplona, Colombia. In 1919, he became the first Colombian to pilot an airplane, and is considered to be the founder of Colombian aviation. He held the rank of brigadier general in the Colombian Air Force ( es, Fuerza Aérea Colombiana). The Camilo Daza International Airport in Cúcuta is named after him, and displays a statue honoring his contributions. VOR-DME
In radio navigation, a VOR/DME is a radio beacon that combines a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) with a distance-measuring equipment (DME). The VOR allows the receiver to measure its bearing to or from the beacon, while the DME provides the slant distance between the receiver and the station. Together, the two measurements allow the receiver to compute a position fix. The VOR system was first introduced in the 1930s, but didn't enter significant commercial use until the early 1950s. It became much more practical with the introduction of low-cost Solid state (electronics), solid state receivers in the 1960s. DME was a modification of World War II-era navigation systems like Gee-H, and began development in 1946.
