The total area is . Saint Waltrude is the patron saint of the city. Highlights Herentals has some outstanding historical buildings, including the church and town hall; the town hall and its belfry is listed as one of the Belfries of Belgium and France, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wout van Aert (born 15 September 1994) is a Belgian professional road and cyclo-cross racer who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Stefaan Vaes (born February 29, 1976 in Herentals, Belgium) is a Belgian mathematician. Vaes studied mathematics at the KU Leuven with a diploma in 1998 and a PhD in 2001 with thesis advisor Alfons Van Daele and thesis Locally Compact Quantum Groups. As a postdoc he was from 1998 to 2002 at KU Leuven and from 1998 to 2002 in Paris, where he did research for CNRS. In 2002 he began part-time teaching at the KU Leuven, where he became an associate professor in 2006 and a full professor in 2009. He was a visiting professor in 2009 at Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI) and in 2011 at Paris Diderot University (Paris VII) (where he habilitated in 2004). Charles-Auguste Fraikin
Charles Auguste Fraikin (14 June 1817 – 22 November 1893) was a Belgian neoclassical sculptor. Life Charles Auguste Fraikin was born in Herentals, Belgium, on 14 June 1817. He took drawing lessons from the age of twelve at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. When he was thirteen, his father died. Fraikin therefore opted for practical training as a pharmacist. He worked in the pharmacy of Auguste-Donat De Hemptinne, brother-in-law of François-Joseph Navez, painter and director of the Brussels Academy, who discovered his talent and encouraged him to continue in the arts. At the in 1845, Fraikin won a gold medal for the sculpture ''L'amour captif''. Marble versions of it were later placed in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Hermitage.
