Herbert Taylor Ussher
Herbert Taylor John Ussher (22 April 1836 – 2 December 1880) was a British colonial administrator who became Governor of the Gold Coast (now Ghana). In private life, he was a keen naturalist and wrote ''"Notes on the ornithology of the Gold Coast"''. He was the son of Thomas Neville Ussher, Consul General of Haiti (and son of Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Ussher), and his wife Eliza Fawcett. On joining the colonial service he sailed for West Africa in 1864 to become the Private Secretary of the Governor of Lagos. Ussher was subsequently made Collector of Customs in 1866 and then Administrator of the Cape Coast from 1867 to 1872. He was invested a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the 1872 Birthday Honours. He was then appointed Governor of Tobago for 1872–1875 and Governor of Labuan (islands off the coast of Borneo) before returning to be Governor of the Gold Coast from June 1879 until his death in December 1880. Samuel Rowe (colonial Administrator)
Sir Samuel Rowe (23 March 1835 – 28 August 1888) was a British doctor and colonial administrator who was twice governor of Sierra Leone, and also served as administrator of the Gambia, governor of the Gold Coast and governor-general of the West Africa settlements. He was known for his ability to form pro-British relationships with the local people. He was in favour of a vigorous programme of expansion from the coast into the interior in response to French activity in the Sahel region, at times in opposition to Colonial Office policy. Early years Samuel Rowe was born on 23 March 1835 at Macclesfield, Cheshire. He was the youngest son of George Hambly Rowe, a Wesleyan minister, and Lydia Ramshall of London. He was educated at private schools, then studied medicine under Joseph Denton of Leicester and others. He qualified as a doctor in 1856. Robert William Harley
Colonel Sir Robert William Harley (1829 – 23 August 1892) was a British colonial administrator. He served as governor-in-chief of the Gold Coast, between September 1872 and 2 October 1873. Harley was born in 1829 and joined the Army in 1847. Cornelius Hendricksen Kortright
Sir Cornelius Hendricksen Kortright, (26 December 1817 – 23 December 1897) was a British civil servant who held positions including Governor of British Guiana. Kortright was baptised on 8 January 1818 at Saint Mary church in London. He was the son of Lawrence and Jane Maria Kortright. He died on 23 December 1897 in Ontario, Canada, three days before his eightieth birthday. Kortright was knighted in 1882. While in Australia, Cornelius Kortright worked for Edmond Morey, and is mentioned in chapters four and five of 'Reminiscences of a pioneer in New South Wales. Charles Lees (colonial Administrator)
Sir Charles Cameron Lees (11 March 1837 – 26 July 1898) was a British military officer and colonial administrator. He was the son of John Campbell Lees, former Chief Justice of the Bahamas. He was originally commissioned into the 1st West India Regiment, but transferred to the 76th Foot in 1854, was promoted Lieutenant, and transferred to the 23rd Foot as adjutant in 1858. He resigned as adjutant in 1864 and retired in 1866, becoming adjutant of the 3rd Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers later that year. Lees was acting Governor of the Gold Coast in 1874, 1876 and 1878–79, Governor of the Bahamas from 1881 to 1884, and Governor of the Leeward Islands from 1884 to 1885. He was 16th Governor of Mauritius from 21 Dec 1889 to 12 Mar 1892 and was Governor of British Guiana from 1893 to 1895. Sir Henry Ernest Gascoyne Bulwer, (11 December 1836 – 30 September 1914), the nephew of Sir Henry Lytton Bulwer and brother to Edward Earle Gascoyne Bulwer, was a British colonial administrator and diplomat.
