Herbert Sparkes
Herbert Weston Sheppard Sparkes (1859 – 22 May 1923) was briefly the Conservative MP for Tiverton. He was elected MP for Tiverton at the 1922 general election. Sparkes was 63 years old when elected. Sparkes did not serve long as an MP, and died in May 1923, aged 64. At the ensuing by-election in June 1923 the seat was won by the Liberal Party. Tiverton was a United Kingdom constituencies, constituency located in Tiverton, Devon, Tiverton in east Devon, formerly represented in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Enfranchised as a parliamentary borough in 1615 and first represented in 1621, it elected two Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Members of Parliament (MPs) by the first past the post system of election until 1885. The name was then transferred to a county constituency electing one MP. (Between 1885 and 1918, the constituency was alternatively called Devon, North East.) 1922 United Kingdom General Election
The 1922 United Kingdom general election was held on Wednesday 15 November 1922. It was won by the Conservative Party, led by Bonar Law, which gained an overall majority over the Labour Party, led by J. R. Clynes, and a divided Liberal Party. This election is considered one of political realignment, with the Liberal Party falling to third-party status. The Conservative Party went on to spend all but eight of the next forty-two years as the largest party in Parliament, and Labour emerged as the main competition to the Conservatives. The election was the first not to be held in Southern Ireland, due to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty on 6 December 1921, under which Southern Ireland was to secede from the United Kingdom as a Dominion – the Irish Free State – on 6 December 1922. The 1923 Tiverton by-election was a parliamentary by-election held for the British House of Commons constituency of Tiverton in Devon on 21 June 1923. Vacancy The by-election was caused by the death from pneumonia on 22 May 1923 of the sitting Unionist Party MP, Herbert Sparkes. Sparkes had been elected at the 1922 general election with a majority of just 74 votes over his Liberal opponent Francis Dyke Acland, with Labour’s Fred Brown badly adrift in third place and losing his deposit. Charles Carew
Charles Robert Sydenham Carew JP (7 June 1853 – 23 March 1939) was a British Conservative politician. Carew was the son of Reverend Robert Baker Carew, Rector of Bickleigh, Devon, grandson of Sir Thomas Carew, 6th Baronet (see Carew baronets). His mother was Augusta Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Daniel. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. Carew served as a Justice of the Peace for Devon and sat as Conservative Member of Parliament for Tiverton between 1915 and 1922. He lived at Colliepriest House, Devon. Carew married Muriel Mary, daughter of Sir John Heathcoat-Amory, 1st Baronet Sir John Heathcoat Heathcoat-Amory, 1st Baronet, DL (4 May 1829 – 26 May 1914), was a British businessman and Liberal politician. Francis Dyke Acland
Sir Francis Dyke Acland, 14th Baronet, (7 March 1874 – 9 June 1939) was a British Liberal politician. He notably served as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under Sir Edward Grey between 1911 and 1915. Ideologically, he was an adherent of the "New Liberalism" within the Liberal Party. Background and education Acland was the son of Sir Arthur Dyke Acland, 13th Baronet, and Alice Sophia Cunningham, daughter of Reverend Francis Macaulay Cunningham. He was educated at Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford.
