Herbert Page Barringer
Herbert Page Barringer (1886 – 12 August 1946) was an Australian watercolour artist. Biography Barringer was born in North Adelaide on 22 November 1886, the child of Leonard Barringer and his wife Fanny ( Page). His older sister, Ethel Barringer Ethel Barringer (24 July 1883 – 30 May 1925) was a South Australian artist who excelled in various media, but was particularly known for her etchings. Ethel was a daughter of Leonard Barringer (ca. 1844 – 11 August 1895) and his wife Fanny ..., was another painter. He married Gwendoline L'Avence Adamson, also a watercolourist, in North Adelaide on 18 Nov 1910. They divorced in 1937. Barringer painted Australian landscapes and was active in the 1920s and 1930s. He died in South Australia on 12 August 1946 and a memorial exhibition of his work was held in Adelaide later that year. Ethel Barringer
Ethel Barringer (24 July 1883 – 30 May 1925) was a South Australian artist who excelled in various media, but was particularly known for her etchings. Ethel was a daughter of Leonard Barringer (ca. 1844 – 11 August 1895) and his wife Fanny, née Page (ca.1857 – 6 July 1920). She was educated at the Advanced School for Girls under Miss Rees George, and was a student of Hans Heysen and Mary Packer Harris at the SA School of Arts and Crafts. She studied in London for several years and took courses in enamelling, jewellery designing, life work, and etching at the St John's Wood Art School The St John's Wood Art School ( The Wood or Calderon's Art School) was an art school in St John's Wood, north London, England. Gwen Barringer
Gwen Barringer (29 July 1882 – 26 August 1960) was a South Australian artist, known for her watercolours. Barringer was noted for watercolours of flowers and landscapes, to which she invested a fairyland-like glamour and remained immune to trends and changing fashions. In 1928 following an extensive sketching tour of Europe she held a solo exhibition in Adelaide which achieved a near record sale (over £1000) for an Australian woman. She died in Adelaide on 26 August 1960 after a long illness. She is represented in the State galleries of South Australia and Victoria, and the National Gallery, Canberra. Barringer studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts under H. P. Gill, Archibald Collins and Hans Heysen. She was a council member of the South Australian Society of Arts for over 30 years, and was also well known as a teacher.
