Herbert Lloyd
Major General Herbert William Lloyd, (18 November 1883 – 10 August 1957) was an Australian Army officer who served in the First and Second World Wars. Early life and career Herbert William Lloyd was born in South Yarra, Melbourne, the son of a police officer. He was educated at University High School and Wesley College. On 26 June 1902 he joined the public service in the treasury department. Lloyd was commissioned in the Australian Field artillery as a second lieutenant on 9 July 1906. He was promoted to lieutenant on 2 July 1907 and then to captain on 16 August 1909. On 31 March 1910, Lloyd quit the treasury department and joined the Permanent Forces as a full lieutenant. He was promoted to captain again on 1 May 1914. First World War Lloyd was appointed to the Australian Imperial Force on 18 August 1914 with the rank of captain as adjutant of the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, which sailed for Egypt in October 1914. The Royal Order of the White Eagle was a Royal Order in the Kingdom of Serbia (1883–1918) and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918–1945). It continues as a dynastic order, with appointments currently made by Alexander, Crown Prince of Yugoslavia. History King Milan I of Serbia instituted the Order of the White Eagle on 23 January 1883, concurrently with the Order of St. Sava. Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; 23 June 1894 – 28 May 1972), later known as the Duke of Windsor, was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire and Emperor of India from 20 January 1936 until his abdication in December of the same year. Alfred Bessell-Browne
Brigadier General Alfred Joseph Bessell-Browne (3 September 1877 – 3 August 1947) was an Australian Army colonel and temporary brigadier general in the First World War. He retired as a brigadier general in 1942. Early life and career Alfred Bessell-Browne was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 3 September 1877, the son of an insurance inspector. The family immigrated to New South Wales where Bessell-Browne attended Camden Grammar. They later moved to Western Australia where he attended Perth High School (now known as Hale School). Bessell-Browne first job was as a clerk in the patents office in 1896. The 5th Division was an infantry Division (military), division of the Australian Army which served during the First World War, First and Second World Wars. The division was formed in February 1916 as part of the expansion of the First Australian Imperial Force, Australian Imperial Force infantry brigades. In addition to the existing 8th Brigade (Australia), 8th Brigade were added the new 14th Brigade (Australia), 14th and 15th Brigade (Australia), 15th Brigades, which had been raised from the battalions of the 1st Brigade (Australia), 1st and 2nd Brigade (Australia), 2nd Brigades respectively. The Lys () or Leie () is a river in France and Belgium, and a left-bank tributary of the Scheldt. Its source is in Pas-de-Calais, France, and it flows into the river Scheldt in Ghent, Belgium. Harold Edward Elliott
Major General Harold Edward "Pompey" Elliott, (19 June 1878 – 23 March 1931) was a senior officer in the Australian Army during the First World War. After the war he served as a Senator for Victoria in the Australian parliament. Elliott entered the University of Melbourne in 1898 to study law, but left in 1900 to serve in the Imperial Bushmen in the South African War. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and given a British Army commission, but chose to remain with the Victorian Imperial Bushmen as an attached subaltern. He returned to Australia in 1901, but went back to South Africa to serve with the Border Scouts, who patrolled remote and inhospitable areas. In December 1901, he distinguished himself in repelling a numerically superior Boer force, and received a congratulatory telegram from General Lord Kitchener. Cape Helles
Cape Helles is the rocky headland at the southwesternmost tip of the Gallipoli peninsula, Turkey. It was the scene of heavy fighting between Ottoman Empire, Ottoman Turkish and United Kingdom, British troops during the landing at Cape Helles at the beginning of the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. The name derives from the Greek Helle (mythology), Helle; Helles means "Helle's" in Greek (see also Hellespont). It is now the site of one of the main memorials of the campaign, the Helles Memorial, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, particularly for those that were part of British and Indian forces (rather than Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, ANZAC forces) fighting there and have no known grave. The 1st Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery is a close support regiment attached to the 7th Brigade at Enoggera Barracks in Queensland. The unit was formed in 1914 under the name 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade, part of 1st Division Artillery during World War I and later served in World War II and the Vietnam War. First Australian Imperial Force
The First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF) was the main expeditionary force of the Australian Army during the First World War. It was formed as the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) following Britain's declaration of war on Germany on 15 August 1914, with an initial strength of one infantry division and one light horse brigade. The infantry division subsequently fought at Gallipoli between April and December 1915, with a newly raised second division, as well as three light horse brigades, reinforcing the committed units.
