Herbert Heron (writer)
Herbert "Bert" Heron (October 26, 1883 – January 7, 1968) was an American writer, actor, and poet. Heron is best known for founding the Forest Theater in 1910. He was the former mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California for two terms in the 1920s. He lived in Carmel for 62 years. Early life Heron was born, as Herbert Heron Peet, on September 9, 1868, in Englewood, New Jersey. His parents were Gilead Smith Peet (1847-1885) and Jeannie Spring (1843-1921). He came from a background of writers and dramatists. On July 17, 1911, he changed his name to Herbert Heron in Superior Court because he wrote and was known under that name. Career Heron grew up in Los Angeles and attended Stanford University but left to go on the stage. He joined the Belasco Stock Company, the Crawley-Meatayer Company, and the Morosco Stock Company in southern California. This experience taught him how to be a Shakespearean actor. Englewood is a city in Bergen County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, which at the 2020 United States census had a population of 29,308. The Carmel Weavers Studio, also known as Cottage of Sweets, was Ruth Kuster's weavers studio, that was in front of the Theatre of the Golden Bough in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Ruth Kuster was the wife of lawyer and theatrical producer Edward G. Kuster. The studio qualified for inclusion in the city's ''Downtown Historic District Property Survey,'' and was registered with the California Register of Historical Resources on January 27, 2003. The building is occupied by the Cottage of Sweets. History The Carmel Weavers Studio is a one-story, plaster and wood-framed Tudor Revival English cottage with a steep pitched side-gabled roof. Carmel stone flower planters are at the base of the building in front on Ocean Avenue and Monte Verde Street behind a Carmel stone court. During the 1930s, the building served as the reading room for the Christian Science organization. It has been designated as a significant commercial building in the city's ''Downtown Historic District Property Survey,'' and was recorded with the Department of Parks and Recreation on January 23, 2002. Mary Hunter Austin (September 9, 1868 – August 13, 1934) was an American writer. One of the early nature writers of the American Southwest, her classic '' The Land of Little Rain'' (1903) describes the fauna, flora, and people – as well as evoking the mysticism and spirituality – of the region between the High Sierra and the Mojave Desert of southern California. Alice MacGowan
Alice L. MacGowan (December 10, 1858 – March 10, 1947) was an American writer. Early years She was born in Perrysburg, Ohio, the daughter of John Encil MacGowan and Malvina Marie Johnson. The family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where her sister Grace was born. Alice was educated in public schools in addition to being home schooled by her father, a Colonel with the Union Army during the American Civil War and editor of the ''Chattanooga Times'' from 1872–1903. She was living with her sister at Upton Sinclair's Helicon Home Colony in 1907 when it burned to the ground. Both were taken to Englewood Hospital to recover.
