Herbert Ashton
Herbert Ashton (23 May 1885 – 28 June 1927) was an English footballer who played for Accrington Stanley, Preston North End and West Ham United. Career Nicknamed 'Tiddler', Ashton started his footballing career with Padiham. He then played for Accrington Stanley, helping the club to win the Lancashire Combination league in 1905–06, and with Preston North End, where he made four appearances in the Football League. Ashton signed for West Ham United in 1908, making his debut on 1 September 1908 against Queens Park Rangers; a 2–0 West Ham win. A firm fans' favourite and small in stature he was rarely without support from the fans when things got rough on the pitch, even to the extent of invading the pitch to protect Ashton in a match against New Brompton. Ashton holds the record for the most appearances in the Southern League for West Ham with 224 appearances. Blackburn
Blackburn () is an industrial town and the administrative centre of the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire, England. The town is north of the West Pennine Moors on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley, east of Preston and north-northwest of Manchester. Blackburn is the core centre of the wider unitary authority area along with the town of Darwen. Southern Football League
The Southern League is a men's football competition featuring semi-professional clubs from the South and Midlands of England. Together with the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League it forms levels seven and eight of the English football league system. The structure of the Southern League has changed several times since its formation in 1894, and currently there are 84 clubs which are divided into four divisions. The Central and South Divisions are at step 3 of the National League System (NLS), and are feeder divisions, mainly to the National League South but also to the National League North. The Football Combination was a football competition for the reserve teams of English Football League clubs from Southern England, the Midlands and Wales; other clubs from the Midlands and those from the North playing in the Central League (it is not to be confused with the Combination, a league for teams from North West England which existed at the turn of the 20th century). History The Combination was inaugurated in 1915 with twelve founder members: Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea, Clapton Orient, Croydon Common, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford and West Ham United. World War I
