Herbert Ashman
Sir Herbert Ashman, 1st Baronet (11 June 1854 – 26 September 1914) was the first Lord Mayor of Bristol. He was born in Yeovil, Somerset, the son of Thomas Nathaniel Ashman and was educated at the Independent College, Taunton. His father moved the family to Bristol when he was only a few months old, where Herbert joined his father's leather processing business at the age of 15. He later became head of his own company of Herbert Ashman & Co., leather factors, manufacturers and importers, based in Broadmead, Bristol. He was the Liberal Councillor of St Paul's ward from 1890 to 1900 and elected Mayor of Bristol in 1898 and 1899. On 12 November 1899 he was knighted by Queen Victoria at the Council House and on 15 November 1899 became Bristol's first Lord Mayor when the Queen conferred the honour of a Lord Mayoralty on the city. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British hereditary honour that is not a peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Black Knights, White Knights, and Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). The position of Lord Mayor of Bristol was conferred on the city in June 1899 (effective 15 November 1899) as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours and was confirmed by letters patent dated 1 April 1974. Prior to November 1899 the position of Mayor of Bristol had existed since 1216. The Lord Mayor is the Chairperson of the City Council and has the casting vote. As Bristol's first citizen, they are the non-political, ceremonial head of the city. The city of Bristol, England, is a unitary authority, represented by four MPs representing seats wholly within the city boundaries. As well as these, Filton and Bradley Stoke covers the northern urban fringe in South Gloucestershire and the north eastern urban fringe is in the Kingswood constituency. The overall trend of both local and national representation became left of centre during the latter 20th century, but there was a shift to the right in the 2010 general election (although this was not reflected in the local elections). Redland Chapel
Redland Parish Church is a Georgian church, built in 1742, in the Redland suburb of Bristol, England. It is a Grade I listed building. History It which was built, probably by John Strahan and completed by William Halfpenny, with plasterwork by Thomas Paty, in 1742 as a private chapel for John Cossins who had purchased the local manor house, Redland Court, which served as Redland High School until 2017, though it was not consecrated until 1790. The chapel eventually became the parish church when the parish of Redland was separated from Westbury-on-Trym in 1942 and, unusually, has no dedication to a patron saint. Architecture The front of the limestone building has four Ionic pilasters around the door with a pediment above. The roof of the building has an octagonal leaded cupola. On the rear of the buildings are carved moors heads. Inside are a square chancel and a nave. The interior has a coffered ceiling and intricately carved wooden panels showing birds and foliage. ...
